Car insurance laws change today

Posted by Linda Davidson

Road users, including those with Reich caravan taps, have been warned of the changes to car insurance legislation.

From today (June 20th) the new Continuous Insurance Enforcement law comes into force, making it illegal to own a vehicle which is uninsured without declaring it legally off the road.

Previously, motorists would only be breaking the law by driving without adequate insurance.

Registered keepers identified as having no insurance will be sent a warning letter alerting them to the situation and highlighting the consequences of failing to take action.

Car owners could receive a £100 fine, see their car clamped, seized or destroyed and may even face court prosecution if they flout the law.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "Law-abiding drivers have nothing to fear from this move, but it is important that they ensure their paperwork is up-to-date. This move should release police time to catch the minority who completely ignore the system – and literally fail to appear on it."
