Caravan accessory owners 'should follow tunnel safety tips'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Drivers who have readied their caravan apparatus and accessories and are getting ready to head on holiday should make sure they are prepared for tunnel driving, a leading organisation has claimed.

Simon Elstow, head of training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, has issued guidance on this area following the opening of the Hindhead tunnel – the longest under-land tunnel in the UK.

He emphasised the importance of drivers with caravans preparing to enter tunnels checking their fuel gauges, turning on the traffic information channel and removing any sunglasses that are worn.

While in the tunnel, caravan rooflights owners have been advised to use dipped headlights, to follow the speed limits and to keep an eye on the emergency pedestrian exists.

For those who are unfortunate enough to break down, Mr Elstow suggested turning the hazard lights on immediately, trying to coast into a breakdown lay-by and evacuating the vehicle to ensure everyone is in a safe place.

Earlier this month, people with caravan apparatus and accessories were advised to conduct essential safety checks before setting off on their summer holidays.

Protype warned that many caravan owners will be taking to the roads for the first time this year and may not recognise the potential deterioration that could have happened while the mobile homes were in storage.
