Caravan park could be approved in Teesdale

Posted by Linda Davidson

A proposed caravan park in Teesdale could soon play host to a number of people with Morco caravan water heaters and Reich caravan taps if plans to expand the site are given the green light.

It has been recommended for approval, despite objections from the owner of a nearby country estate, reports the Teesdale Mercury.

Paul Barkes has applied for planning permission for a number of static and mobile caravan pitches in the Thorpe Farm site, as well as camping pods and an amenity block.

The scheme is part of a more general plan to expand the site into a major tourist destination, something which has met with approval from planning officers after initial concerns about overcrowding on the road were assuaged.

Planning agent Gary Swarbrick, speaking on Mr Barkes' behalf, said the proposal for Thorpe Farm will "lead to the creation of a unique tourist destination in this important gateway location".

County Durham already has a number of caravan parks for tourists interested in visiting the area, including a picturesque Finchale Abbey site close to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery.
