Council cuts to gritters 'could make winter roads more dangerous'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Road users who own caravan accessories such as Truma caravan water heaters should invest in higher tread tyres to prepare for a lack of grit on UK roads this winter, one motoring manufacturer has advised.

Tyre production company Michelin suggested that motorists should buy tyres suitable for slippy winter roads before it is too late.

Following on from recent reports that councils across England are cutting their budgets for seasonal road maintenance which could affect the amount of grit placed on the roads, Michelin urged drivers to do everything possible in order to prepare their vehicles.

Jianni Geras, Michelin's head of car marketing, said: "Bearing in mind how many cars are on the roads, especially over the Christmas holiday period, we hope drivers get the message about the improvements in safety that are available by fitting cold weather tyres."

Furthermore, the Highways Agency has suggested that road users spend more time preparing their car for winter, including putting together an emergency travel kit.
