County Durham caravan park plans 'leave locals divided'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Travellers with Comet caravan taps may be interested to hear that plans to build a caravan park on the site of a privately-owned pub have been met with divided opinion from members of a rural village in County Durham.

The landlord of The Countryman in Bolam has suggested that he use the land on the site to expand a caravanning and camping park, which would bring more visitors to the area.

However, local residents have objected, claiming that the proposed site is too large for the village to cope with.

Paul Stabler, who owns the pub, said: "The site is very popular and attracts many tourists from all over. I do know, from working with Visit County Durham, how important tourism is."

Currently, the village hosts an all-year camping and caravanning site which can hold five tourers.

The Camping and Caravanning Club recently reported that holidays in Britain are to remain popular in 2012 and that more people are opting for 'staycations' rather than going abroad.
