DfT attempts to cut red tape

Posted by Linda Davidson

People with motorhomes and camper-van items planning a holiday in the UK over the coming months may be pleased to learn of the latest step from the Department for Transport (DfT) to cut down on the traffic clogging Britain's roads.

The latest move involves incorporating street works permit schemes which will give councils more power over people carrying out potentially disruptive road works in busy areas.

Once a permit system is in place, any company carrying out repairs must abide by a number of strict conditions, including the length of time they are allowed to use the area for and how much space they should leave road users.

This is expected to ease congestion for holidaymakers and other people travelling across the country.

"Councils should be spending their time improving the lives of their local residents not being bogged down by unnecessary bureaucracy," said Norman Baker.

Any caravanners passing through the London area will also be gratified to learn Transport for London (TfL) has introduced a number of new measures to cut down on congestion.
