Drivers in France need to carry breathalyser from July

People with Waeco caravan fridges planning to take their holiday in France over the summer have been warned they will need to carry a breathalyser in their vehicle at all times, after new regulations were brought in by the French government.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has warned anyone travelling through France from July onwards will be eligible for a fine if they are found not to be complying with this demand.

Motorists should carry two single-use kits in order to have a spare if one of them has to be used, according to IAM.

People driving in France are already obliged to carry a fluorescent jacket and warning triangle in case of an emergency on the road.

"The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol related-accidents ... as always, the best advice for motorists is not to drink and drive at all," said IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig.

France can be a popular destination for caravanning holidays, with the Camping and Caravanning Club offering a number of sites along the Aquitaine coast.
