Drivers support 20mph limits

Posted by Linda Davidson

Motorists, including those with caravan accessories, are in favour of more 20mph zones but not of speed limit enforcement.

These are the findings of a new poll of 4,000 people by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Some 67 per cent of drivers claimed that 20mph zones outside schools are a good idea, while a further 38 per cent would like to see the same limit on roads with amenities such as parks and shops.

However, only a quarter want to see a blanket 20mph limit in all built-up areas and both passive and police-led enforcement methods are unpopular.

"If lower speed limits are restricted to locations and times where there is an obvious need, responsible drivers, who are the overwhelming majority, will adhere to them without the need for enforcement," said IAM head of road safety Kevin Delaney.

Simon Elstow, head of training at the IAM recently advised those getting ready for their holiday to be prepared to drive through tunnels safely.
