Ferries 'offer good European links'

Posted by Freddy Morton

Holidaymakers with caravans can set off with their Thetford caravan fridge and head out on ferry journeys which resemble mini-cruises, according to the director of the Passenger Shipping Association.

Bill Gibbons emphasised that much of Europe is now accessible from Britain's ferry terminals, citing destinations like Spain, Belgium and cities like Lille and Amsterdam as easily reachable by boat.

His advice came as National Ferry Fortnight was moved forward to March in order to emphasise the importance of affordable family travel as Britain's economy comes under pressure.

A variety of deals and incentives will be offered to people taking ferries, including passengers travelling with caravans and Truma water heaters.

Mr Gibbons said: "Ferry travel has become more and more comfortable in the recent years with operators introducing luxury vessels and offering gourmet meals on-board."

He added that some journeys involved an overnight stay with a cabin, making the experience more like a cruise than an ordinary ferry crossing.
