Highways Agency urges drivers to be prepared for winter

Posted by Freddy Morton

People who are planning to drive to caravan sites and other locations in the UK during the winter months should begin preparing now, the Highways Agency has said.

Roads minister Mike Penning said: "Not all journeys are essential in severe weather, but if people feel that they must travel during severe conditions there are some simple steps that can reduce the risk of being caught out by the weather."

The agency, which maintains Britain's major roads, has urged all drivers to carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out, to carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles and to monitor the traffic and weather conditions and plan their journeys.

Mr Penning added that the Highways Agency had learned from the severe weather of the last two winters and has strengthened its capability to face extended spells of extreme weather.

However, the AA claimed that there were still weak links in the supply rock salt supply chain and expressed concern about the agency's ability to cope with the winter conditions starting so early.

The Highways Agency suggested that high-sided vehicles such as caravans should be extra cautious, in light of the high winds experienced last week.
