Kill the conversation behind the wheel, campaign urges

Posted by Linda Davidson

Road users who own accessories and appliances for your camper van such as a 12v television should maintain their driving concentration by keeping the distraction of a mobile phone far away, according to a new campaign.

GEM Motoring Assist suggested that drivers should "kill the conversation and not themselves" in a bid to reduce the number of road accidents and the amount of people prosecuted for breaking the law.

Research by the company showed that a record number of drivers have been penalised for using their phones while behind the wheel, even since the actions were made illegal in 2003.

David Williams, chief executive of GEM Motoring Assist, said that drivers must remember to keep a phone with them for emergencies but must not be distracted by it when driving.

"The temptation to use your mobile phone while driving can be greatly reduced if you turn it off and keep it out of reach," he added.

In 2009, a bill was introduced to make texting behind the wheel illegal.
