Minister cuts road red tape

Posted by Freddy Morton

The local and regional transport minister Norman Barker has told those with home-from-home apparatus that measures are coming into force to stop red tape on the roads.

As part of the changes, the first announced as part of the Traffic Signs Policy Review, councils will be able to reduce time-consuming and costly bureaucracy when trying to install a 20mph speed limit.

Councils will be able to use signs painted on roads rather an expensive uprights in order to cut costs and reduce street clutter.

Additionally, the need for speed humps in 20 mph zones has been revoked, making it easier and less expensive to place variable speed limits outside schools should local residents call for it.

"If councils and local communities want to put in place 20mph schemes on residential roads or use common-sense measures such as variable speed limits… then they should be able to do so without spending time and money satisfying unnecessary Whitehall diktats," said Mr Baker.

However, the Road Safety Markings Association recently revealed that white road markings are not kept in order, with a third of the UK's roads ranking as substandard.
