MOT could be every 2 years

Posted by Linda Davidson

Proposals are being considered which will affect the frequency that MOTs are carried out, reports the Times.

The proposals, if implemented, would replace the current MOT with an inspection regime more in line with Europe in an attempt to streamline regulations.

Tests would be carried out on a vehicle after four years and then it would require re-testing on a biannual basis, moving away from the current yearly system.

Mike Penning, the minister for road safety, said: "The MOT plays an important role in making sure vehicles are road worthy and should strike the right balance between vehicle safety and the burden imposed on motorists."

Elizabeth Box from the RAC told the newspaper that changing the test to every two years would make sense as cars are generally more reliable today.

The motor trade has reacted angrily to the suggestions, with John Ball of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) suggesting that the regulations "will kill people and kill jobs".

Caravan water heaters owners were recently informed that the Driving Standards Agency is intending to change the car and trailer driving test in the New Year.
