Motorists are angry about the state of UK roads

Owners of Smev caravan hobs and cookers may be among the motorists embarking on a clash with local councils about the state of the roads.

Over the last year alone there are been 22,000 successful claims against councils for damage caused to vehicles as a result of potholes, with the average payout coming to £200.

CarParts-Direct claimed that poor road maintenance by local authorities costs drivers six times more than it would cost councils to make the repairs.

The situation is set to get even worse as the Highways Agency recently downgraded the size of potholes it considered a priority, meaning many will be left to get bigger before they are fixed.

Martin Mosley from CarParts-Direct claimed that the damage done by poorly maintained roads is unbelievable.

"Our Steering Racks and Driveshafts are remanufactured items so the old part is returned to us when the job is done. Some are damaged so badly they are useless. In 25 years I have never known this level of destruction. It is unsafe," he explained.
