Motorists urged to avoid the M1

Posted by Freddy Morton

Motorists, including those with Spinflo caravan cookers and hobs, may want to avoid the M1 when taking a trip in the next few days.

Two lanes are now open northbound on the motorway with a 50mph speed restriction between junctions one and four, following damage caused by a fire on Friday.

A fire at a scrap yard underneath an elevated section of the road forced the M1 to close on Friday, with the one lane northbound and the whole southbound carriageway still shut and unlikely to open before 16:00 BST today.

Roads Minister Mike Penning said that although the road is now partially open, he advises motorists to avoid the route.

He suggested that it is unlikely that the route will be fully open until the middle to the end of next week.

"The bridge has been damaged by the fire quite badly and that means we have to make sure it's safe for the motorist and safe for our workers underneath the bridge," he said.

This was supported by the Highways Agency, which stressed that urgent repairs were needed for the road to be usable.
