Pack the car securely this weekend

Posted by Linda Davidson

As families pack up their belongings and caravan accessories to head off for the bank holiday weekend, they have been urged to load their motor properly.

Head of training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Simon Elstow has urged drivers to take care when packing their cars as doing to incorrectly can be dangerous.

He said that heavy items should ideally be packed at the bottom of the boot, with loads kept as small as possible to ensure that the driver has a clear view through the rear view mirror.

Loose objects also need to be packed securely to avoid them flying towards the front of the vehicle should the motorist need to brake for any reason.

It may also be wise to pump up the tyres and regularly check fuel levels as fully-laden cars will use more fuel, something exacerbated by underinflated tyres.

"Bad packing can be dangerous and you could be prosecuted if your baggage looks unsecure," Mr Elstow explained.

Brake and Direct Line have also urged back holiday travellers to keep calm on the road.
