Pothole rules may affect motorists

Posted by Linda Davidson

Motorists, including owners of Waeco caravan fridges, have been advised of a change to the categorisation of potholes.

The Highways Agency has revised the rules to state that potholes smaller than 15cm wide or 4cm deep are not classed as urgent and will not be repaired within a 24-hour period.

At the moment the revision will only come into effect in the West Country, however it will be rolled out across the rest of the country by 2015.

The move follows a massive increase in potholes as a result of three consecutive severe winters, with 2010/11 deemed the coldest for 100 years.

Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) director of policy Neil Greig said that the change is only storing up problems for the future.

"All large potholes start off as small potholes – it's easier and cheaper to fix them early and reduce the risk to road users," said Mr Greig.
