Rising car insurance premiums make the road 'unsafe'

Posted by Linda Davidson

Rapidly rising car insurance costs are likely to make the road more dangerous for motorists and users of Vaillant caravan taps alike.

A spokeswoman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said that the increasing cost of car insurance means than many young people are likely to start finding it prohibitively expensive, increasing the temptation to drive without cover.

"This is particularly the case for those who already struggling to afford to be on the road," she added.

Even if young people can stretch to the cost of cover, the spokeswoman claims that that cost of insurance will mean the younger generation are less able to afford newer and safer vehicles, making the road more dangerous for everyone.

"The average cost of a claim by young drivers is £4,500, but insurance can cost nearly twice that … for a 17-year-old male, our cheapest quote came in at just over £7,000," the spokeswoman explained.

Research by Confused.com revealed that the 17 to 20-year-old age group has seen an 8.2 per cent annual rise in premiums.
