Speed limit rise 'sends out the wrong message'

Posted by Linda Davidson

Reich caravan taps owners have been told that raising the motorway speed limit would send out the wrong message to motorists.

Last week transport secretary Philip Hammond said the government was considering plans to increase the motorway speed limit to 80mph to increase productivity and reduce journey times.

He suggested that gains provided by the speed limit increase could help with the economic recovery.

However speed awareness campaigners Coyote have slammed his comments, suggesting they make a mockery of road safety.

"An extra 10mph on the motorway is not going to make any meaningful change to individual journey times and certainly can't outweigh the potential safety risks, wasteful fuel use and loss of natural resources that are already rapidly running out," said Andrew Smith, managing director of Cobra UK, main distributor of Coyote speed cameras.

He added that he supported government efforts to boost the flagging economy but suggested that using it as an excuse to raise speed limits is not credible.
