Take care on rural roads

Posted by Greg Throughton

Drivers need to take care on rural roads as they can often be more hazardous, an expert has warned those with Propex caravan water heaters.

Simon Elstow, head of training at Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Drive & Survive, said that cyclists, horses, blind turns and high speeds can all conspire to make rural roads dangerous, even if the driver knows the road really well.

He suggested that this summer, as more people take to the roads and encounter rural routes that they may not be familiar with, motorists ought to leave more time for journeys in case they get stuck behind a tractor or a horse.

Speed should be judged by the driver's clear view of the distance, he added, so if a motorist can only see a few metres ahead they need to be able to stop in that time.

"On average, two thirds of those people killed on UK roads, were driving on rural roads. Bank and summer holidays see drivers on rural roads that they are not familiar with. High speed limits, tight bends and unexpected hazards all add to the risk," Mr Elstow said.

He also recently warned that the summer is likely to bring heavy downpours, which can make the roads treacherous.
