Thorough checks to cars before winter 'are best'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Drivers and those with Dometic caravan refrigeration should take time to prepare their vehicles for winter to prevent damage from the cold, one expert has warned.

Caroline Holmes, spokeswoman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IMA) said that motorists need to make a list of things to check on their cars to ensure that everything is in running order.

She added: "Do a proper check of your vehicle - particularly the tyres - top up your washer fluid and make sure last year's ice scraper and de-icer are up to the job."

Ms Holmes advised that windscreen wipers should be looked at to see if they are in good condition and to also keep a check on tyre tread depth which should be over the legal requirement of 1.6mm.

She mentioned that people should take an emergency breakdown kit with them including warm blankets, a shovel and a torch.

Roads minister Mike Penning recently stated that the Highways Agency is getting ready for winter and that drivers should be encouraged to do the same to ensure cooperation and fewer problems on main roads.
