Traffic jams and delays 'cause loss of 123 million hours'

Caravan owners with a 12v television could be among the thousands of British drivers who collectively lost 123 million hours while stuck in traffic last year.

According to Churchill Car insurance, road users have changed their working days and driving patterns in a bid to avoid waiting in traffic jams, but they are still on average 40 minutes late every day.

Tony Chilcott, head of Churchill Car Insurance, said: "It's incredibly frustrating for motorists to have to adapt their working hours just to avoid congestion on the roads.

"The result is millions of working hours wasted in traffic jams each year."

Research by the insurance provider found the constant strain of heavy traffic volumes on the roads is costing time and money - with an estimated £752 million spent annually on maintaining the carriageways.

Additionally, 15 per cent of drivers admitted to changing the hours they work and spend driving in an attempt to avoid the peak hours.

Motoring school IAM Drive & Survive recently suggested the winter weather could cause more disruption and that car owners should be prepared by taking with them a full kit of emergency supplies.
