Tyre safety checks are essential this summer

Posted by Linda Davidson

Owners of Dometic caravan fridges have been urged to check their tyre pressure to avoid a blow-out this summer.

Before setting off on a journey, motorists need to do a pre-holiday checklist, including making sure tread depth is adequate, that the tyres are inflated correctly for the load and that the general condition is good.

"Whether you're heading overseas in your car, or staying in the UK, correct tyre maintenance is vital to reduce the risk of being stranded by the roadside or involved in an accident as a result of a tyre related issue," said Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.

He said that British summers are famed for their unpredictable weather and tyres need to have sufficient tread to keep grip in wet conditions should there be a sudden downpour.

TyreSafe also recommended operating a caravan below the maximum weight limit, with a ten per cent margin allowing for unequal load distribution.
