UK holidays 'becoming more popular'

Posted by Linda Davidson

Owners of Comet caravan taps are unlikely to be surprised that UK holidays have increased in popularity.

According to Sarah Long, spokeswoman for VisitEngland, the number of people choosing to stay in the UK for their holidays has risen since 2009.

She said that the concept of the staycation really took hold in 2009 and has grown in popularity since then.

"It was as a direct result of the credit crunch. That gave those people who took a holiday at home - who wouldn't usually have taken one - the opportunity to rediscover a destination on their doorstep," Ms Long said.

Furthermore, she suggests that more than half of the UK population take more breaks at home than they did in the past.

According to Saga, 76 per cent of over 50s prefer staycations and include breaks in the UK in their holiday plans.
