Wet weather can be dangerous for road users

Posted by Linda Davidson

Motorists and those with Smev caravan hobs and cookers have been advised how to deal with the wet weather as we move into autumn.

IAM Drive & Survive head of training Simon Elstow explained that rain and falling leaves can have a surprising effect on cars.

He urged drivers to clean out the plenum chambers – the tray-like area under the bonnet, below the windscreen – regularly as these can fill with water or get blocked by leaves, which can cause expensive damage to a car's electrics.

It is also worth noting that a patch of wet leaves in the road can have the have effect has driving into standing water, so he advised motorists to slow down and approach with caution.

"Bear in mind that leaves can be slippery, especially when wet. Avoid hard acceleration or braking as it can cause skidding. And be aware that there may be a dip, pothole or other road hazard hiding under those leaves covering the road," Mr Elstow said.

New research by What Car? also revealed that winter tyres can dramatically improve handling in the snow, ice and wet.
