Windsor Great Park to become Olympic caravan park

Posted by Freddy Morton

Holidaymakers with camper-van appliances and accessories like Waeco caravan fridges will be able to pitch up on Windsor Great Park this summer, after the Queen agreed to plans to convert the former private hunting ground into a caravan and tent park.

Over 1,000 people will be accommodated in the 286-pitch site, which will be open from July 20th to August 16th 2012 and controlled by the Caravan and Camping Club.

Pitches will be beside the park's famous Long Walk, close to Windsor Castle and only two miles from the rowing, flat water canoeing and kayaking Olympic venue, Eten Dorney lake.

Membership services director Paul Jones said the club is delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Crown Estate to offer this service to caravanners and campers.

"Windsor is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful natural scenery," said Mr Jones.

The park reputedly dates from the twelfth century, having been developed by William the Conqueror as a defensive base over the river Thames.
