Winter weather 'can cause problems for drivers'

Owners of a Waeco caravan fridge are being advised to drive safely during the winter months as one expert offers tips on how to manoeuvre on icy roads.

School of driving training specialists IAM Drive & Survive advised road users on how to safely accelerate on roads that may be slippy from frost, snow and ice as part of an ongoing series of top tips for all conditions.

Most recently, the school suggested that drivers should take extra care on roads in the colder seasons and carefully decide on whether to embark on a journey.

Simon Elstow, head of the training session, said: "Power and acceleration are no good without control. This is especially true when drivers are faced with cold, wet and slippery conditions."

If weather conditions are adverse, drivers should only take a journey if absolutely necessary, he added.

Mr Elstow advised that motorists should be aware of the way their vehicle applies power to the road and how to control this through gear changes. Getting grip on the road through the use of higher gears is an important skill, he commented.

Further advice states that motorists should take a kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots as well as a first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel in case of emergencies or severe changes in the weather.
