BST to GMT causes more accidents, charity warns

Posted by Linda Davidson

Drivers and owners of Comet caravan taps may benefit from lighter days as one charity suggests that clocks should be turned forward not back all year round.

Brake, road safety charity, suggested turning from BST to GMT makes roads less safe for drivers and pedestrians as visibility is compromised and stopping time reduced.

The charity urged the government to make the change to daylight savings rules, which could make motorists more aware of the benefits of driving during the day when visibility is not reduced.

Julie Townsend, Brake campaigns director, said: "As the dark evenings draw in it is even more important that drivers keep a look out for vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists, and slow down to 20mph in communities."

She added that the forward alteration of time could prevent an estimated 450 deaths and serious injuries caused on the roads in the darker winter months.

A survey by manufacturer Autoglass showed that 67 per cent of peole agreed with Brake that time should be moved forward all year round to maintain road safety.

Brake said that lighter evenings and more sunlight during daytime hours would make roads safer, create better visibility for drivers and pedestrians and fundamentally reduce the risk of accidents happening.
