Motorists distrust speed cameras

Posted by Freddy Morton

Motorists in Britain do not trust speed cameras are there to prevent crashes, those interested in Comet caravan taps were told.

Following a poll of over 1,000 drivers in the UK, the Institute of Advances Motorists (IAM) revealed that less than a third of motorists think speed cameras are only used at sites with a bad record of crashes and injuries.

Furthermore, 50 per cent think that the principle aim of speed cameras is to raise money rather than prevent collisions.

Support for speed cameras is generally fairly high at 79 per cent, although this increases to 85 per cent in London and drops to 67 per cent in the north-east.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "Support for cameras is strong as is support for speed awareness training rather than fines or points."

"Many motorists are still cynical about the aims and deployment of speed cameras and much more work needs to be done to dispel their negative perceptions," he added.

The IAM also revealed that business and commercial drivers are in support of education rather than fines for reckless driving.
