New congestion measures announced

Posted by Linda Davidson

A new report by the Transport Committee has proposed a number of measures to reduce congestion on UK roads, owners of campervan equipment and accessories have been told.

According to the report, a tougher driving test, keeping drivers updated on changes to the Highway Code and the introduction of a managed motorway system would all prevent jams.

Committee chair Louise Ellman said that congestion currently costs the UK economy billions of pounds each year, so it is clear that in the existing climate, this cannot be allowed to continue.

"Improving the way we manage road space so that the network runs more smoothly is vital to the prosperity of the nation. Pursuing this challenge should form a key plank of central government transport policy," she explained.

Ms Ellman added that ministers need to clarify who is responsible for ensuring road users are aware of congestion in advance in order to avoid it so that the build-up does not continue.

Road safety charity Brake and Direct Line recently teamed up to urge drivers to stay calm when caught in traffic.
