The Outwell Sideroads Awning Room transforms your motorhome's wind-out awning into proper living space. It's specifically designed for taller commercial base vehicles like the Fiat Ducato, Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter, with attachment points that work at heights between 240-260 cm. The dual bead system (7mm and 5mm) means it'll connect to most standard awning rails without needing adapters. At 375 cm wide, it provides enough room for a table and chairs or extra sleeping space, whilst the tinted side windows let light in without creating a goldfish bowl effect. The Outtex 4000 Select polyester fabric keeps rain out even in prolonged downpours, and the PFAS-free water repellency is better for the environment than older treatments.

Setup takes about 15 minutes once you've done it a couple of times. The pre-attached luminous guylines are genuinely helpful when you're pitching in fading light, and the included roof rafter poles stop the fabric sagging between your awning and the ground. Steel poles add a bit of weight (7.7 kg total) compared to aluminium alternatives, but they're more robust in windy conditions and less prone to bending. The pack size of 72 x 26 x 26 cm fits in most garage lockers without eating up too much storage space. Everything you need comes in the bag including pegs, poles, the awning connection kit and a basic repair kit.

This awning room works best as seasonal touring kit rather than something you'll put up and take down daily. The UPF 30+ protection makes a noticeable difference on sunny sites, particularly if you're spending extended periods underneath. One thing to note is that whilst the 4000 mm hydrostatic head provides solid waterproofing, you'll want to check the seams are properly sealed before your first trip, as some users find factory sealing can be inconsistent. It's compatible with most wind-out awnings but measure your rail height and awning projection before ordering, as returns on seasonal accessories can be awkward timing-wise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What motorhomes is the Outwell Sideroads Awning Room designed for?
The Sideroads is built for taller commercial base vehicles including the Fiat Ducato, Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter. The attachment height range of 240-260 cm works with most high-top conversions and panel van motorhomes. If your awning rail sits below 240 cm or above 260 cm, this model won't fit your vehicle. Measure from the ground to the centre of your awning rail before ordering.
Does the Outwell Sideroads fit all wind-out awnings?
The dual bead system (7mm and 5mm) connects to most standard awning rails without adapters. You need a minimum awning projection of 375 cm for the room to attach properly. Check your wind-out awning extends at least this far when fully deployed. The Sideroads works with Thule Omnistor, Fiamma F45, Dometic and other common wind-out awning brands, but measure your specific setup to confirm compatibility.
How long does it take to set up the Outwell Sideroads Awning Room?
Setup takes around 15 minutes once you're familiar with the process. First-time pitching might take 25-30 minutes whilst you work out the pole configuration and bead attachment. The pre-attached luminous guylines speed things up in low light conditions. The roof rafter poles slot into place between your awning and the ground to maintain tension. This is not a daily-use product. It works best when you're staying on a site for several days or longer.
Is the Outwell Sideroads waterproof in heavy rain?
The Outtex 4000 Select polyester fabric has a 4000 mm hydrostatic head, which handles prolonged rain and stormy conditions. The PFAS-free water repellency treatment provides reliable protection throughout the season. Check all seam sealing before your first use as factory application can sometimes be inconsistent. Apply seam sealer to any gaps or thin areas. The steel frame holds firm in wind and the fabric doesn't sag when wet.
What's included with the Outwell Sideroads Awning Room?
The package contains the awning room fabric, steel poles, roof rafter poles, pegs, the dual bead connection kit for attaching to your awning rail, a basic repair kit and a carry bag. All guylines come pre-attached to the fabric with luminous sections for visibility. The pack size measures 72 x 26 x 26 cm and weighs 7.7 kg. You don't need to buy any additional components to complete the setup.
How much living space does the Outwell Sideroads provide?
The Sideroads measures 375 cm wide, giving you enough floor space for a camping table with four chairs or two single camp beds. The attachment height of 240-260 cm provides standing room for most adults. Tinted side windows let natural light in without creating excessive heat buildup. The room works as dining space during the day and can convert to sleeping quarters at night. Standing headroom depends on your vehicle's awning height and the roof pole angle.
Why does the Outwell Sideroads use steel poles instead of aluminium?
Steel poles add stability in windy conditions and resist bending better than aluminium alternatives. The weight penalty is 7.7 kg total for the complete pack. Steel frames hold their shape when the fabric gets wet and heavy, preventing sagging that can pool water on the roof. The trade-off between weight and strength makes sense for seasonal touring where you're not carrying and pitching daily. Aluminium would be lighter but less robust for extended site stays.
Does the Outwell Sideroads provide UV protection?
The fabric offers UPF 30+ sun protection, blocking over 96% of UV radiation. This makes a genuine difference during extended periods underneath on sunny sites. The tinted windows reduce glare whilst maintaining visibility. The protection level applies to the main fabric panels. UV resistance helps prevent fabric degradation over multiple seasons. The PFAS-free water repellency treatment doesn't affect the UV blocking properties.
