The Outwell Wolfburg Air is a drive-away awning that mounts parallel to your campervan rather than perpendicular to it. This configuration saves significant pitch space because the awning extends alongside your vehicle instead of sticking out at 90 degrees. You get a proper living area measuring 250cm wide at the connection point with full standing height between 175-200cm, and the whole structure inflates via Outwell's Rigid Air System instead of using traditional poles. The attachment uses either 7mm or 5mm beading to fit most campervans, and the removable Access Zone section gives you flexibility to position the front door facing forwards or backwards depending on your pitch layout.

Once inflated and pegged out, you can disconnect the awning completely and drive off for the day. The pre-shaped DuraAir tubes maintain structural integrity when freestanding, so you don't need to deflate and repack everything just to visit a supermarket or explore the area. Inside you get one large living space with a sewn-in polyethylene groundsheet, two side doors with mesh screens, and a front door with double zips backed by full mesh for ventilation without insects. The Outtex 3000 Select flysheet provides 3000mm hydrostatic head protection and UPF 30+ sun blocking, whilst large tinted windows with toggle-up curtains give you control over light and privacy. The HookTrack system runs internally for hanging lights or storage organisers up to 1.5kg.

At 21.8kg packed weight this sits at the heavier end for inflatable awnings, which reflects the robust Duratec fibreglass framework (8.5mm and 9.5mm sections) supporting the structure. Pack size is 93 x 38 x 38cm so you'll need decent storage capacity. Everything comes included - pump, pegs, repair kit, five hooktrack hooks, five extra guylines and a valve tool. Outwell now uses PFAS-free water repellency across their range, so whilst the fabric performs well in typical British weather, you might notice it wets out faster than older chemical treatments after prolonged heavy rain. The parallel mounting works brilliantly on compact pitches but does mean you're essentially doubling your vehicle's footprint lengthways rather than widthways, so check pitch dimensions before booking if you're heading to smaller sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes parallel mounting different from standard drive-away awnings?
Parallel mounting means the Wolfburg Air attaches alongside your campervan rather than sticking out at a 90-degree angle from the side. This configuration doubles your vehicle's footprint lengthways instead of widthways, which works better on narrow pitches where width is restricted but length is available. Standard perpendicular awnings add significant width to your pitch requirement, whilst the Wolfburg extends along the vehicle's length to save lateral space.
Can the awning stay standing when I drive away with my campervan?
Yes, the pre-shaped DuraAir tubes maintain structural integrity when freestanding after you disconnect the awning from your vehicle. You simply unzip the connection tunnel, drive out, and the awning stays inflated and stable without requiring guy ropes to the vehicle. This lets you use your campervan for day trips or shopping runs without dismantling your camp setup. The sewn-in groundsheet and pegged-out structure remains secure in typical wind conditions.
What beading size do I need to connect this to my campervan?
The Wolfburg Air includes connection options for both 7mm and 5mm beading to fit most campervans with awning rails. Most modern campervans from Volkswagen, Mercedes, Peugeot, Citroen and Ford use either 6mm or 7mm awning channels, whilst some older vehicles or specific models use 5mm sizing. The attachment height range of 175cm to 200cm accommodates standard campervan roof heights, but you should measure your vehicle's awning rail height before purchasing to confirm compatibility.
How long does the Rigid Air System take to inflate?
The Rigid Air System typically inflates in 5 to 8 minutes using the included pump. The pre-shaped DuraAir tubes connect via a single inflation point, so you're not inflating multiple separate tubes like some inflatable awning designs. The valve system holds pressure once inflated without requiring constant monitoring, and the included valve tool helps with precise pressure adjustment. Deflation for packing away takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes as you need to press air out of the tubes before rolling.
Is the sewn-in groundsheet fully waterproof?
The sewn-in groundsheet uses double-coated waterproof polyethylene that provides complete protection from ground moisture and prevents water ingress at the base. This material is heavier and more durable than bathtub-style groundsheets found in lightweight tents. The sewn-in design eliminates gaps where water could seep through, and the polyethylene construction resists punctures from stones or rough ground better than standard polyester tent flooring.
What does PFAS-free water repellency mean for weatherproofing?
Outwell switched to PFAS-free water repellency treatments to remove harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from their fabrics. The PFAS-free coating still provides effective water resistance with the 3000mm hydrostatic head rating, but it wets out faster than older fluorocarbon treatments during prolonged heavy rainfall. This means the outer fabric may feel damp to touch after extended rain, though water penetration remains blocked. The environmental benefit comes with a minor trade-off in bead-up performance compared to chemical-treated fabrics.
Will this fit in my campervan's storage locker?
The pack size measures 93cm long by 38cm wide by 38cm deep with a total weight of 21.8kg. Most large campervans with external storage lockers can accommodate these dimensions, but compact campervans or those with shallow under-bed storage may struggle. A standard external locker on vehicles like the VW California or Mercedes Marco Polo typically measures around 100cm to 120cm wide, so length is the critical dimension to check. The 21.8kg weight requires two people for comfortable lifting and positioning into high storage areas.
What is the Access Zone and how does it work?
The Access Zone is a removable front section that lets you configure which direction the main door faces. You can position it so the door opens forwards towards the pitch or backwards towards the vehicle depending on your site layout and preference. This flexibility helps when you're pitched on slopes, next to hedges, or in situations where standard door orientation would be awkward. The Access Zone zips in and out using Outwell's heavy-duty zippers, and removal doesn't compromise the structural integrity of the main awning.
