THIS COOLBOX USES COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY
What is the difference between the cooling technologies? ABSORPTION COOLING Details of distinguishing features:
Gas-powered cooling independent of electricity
Three way cooling – Gas, 12 volts DC or 230 volts AC
Silent operation
Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature
The Technical Bit A concentrated ammonia solution is heated in a boiler and expelled as vapour. The pressurised ammonia gas is then liquefied in a condenser. Supplied with hydrogen, it evaporates and in the process extracts heat from the storage container. The ammonia gas then enters the absorber where it is reabsorbed in a weak solution of ammonia. Finally, the saturated solution flows back to the boiler where the whole cycle starts again.
THERMOELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY Details of distinguishing features:
12 / 24 / 230 Volt
Independent of inclination
Lightweight and low-cost
Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature
The Technical Bit The thermoelectric principle was discovered by J. C. A. Peltier, which is why the temperature generating parts of thermoelectric systems are referred to as Peltier elements. Thermoelectrics are based on the fact that cold or heat energy (depending on the polarity) is generated when a DC current is conducted between different types of metal. The heating or cooling capacity is further enhanced by heat exchangers and air fans. Ideal for low and medium cooling volumes.
COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY Details of distinguishing features:
Excellent cooling performance even at extreme ambient temperatures
Refrigeration and deep-freezing
12 / 24 / 100 – 240 volts
Low power consumption – suitable for solar operation
Battery protection
Quiet operation with little vibration
Independent of inclination
The Technical Bit Compressor units operate using a refrigerant that changes from liquid to gaseous state in the evaporator. The evaporation extracts heat from the interior of the cooling unit – the temperature drops. The compressor draws in the refrigerant, compresses it and passes it on to the condenser. Here, the absorbed heat is released to the atmosphere. The refrigerant liquefies again and flows to the evaporator, where the cycle begins again.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the main advantage of dual zone technology in the Mestic MCCP-90?
The dual zone system lets you run one compartment as a freezer at -18°C whilst the other operates as a fridge at +5°C simultaneously. This eliminates the need for two separate cooling units and means you can keep ice cream frozen whilst chilling drinks in the same appliance. Each 45-litre zone has independent digital temperature control, so you're not limited to a single temperature setting across the entire 90-litre capacity.
How does compressor cooling differ from absorption or thermoelectric cool boxes?
Compressor technology maintains consistent temperatures regardless of ambient heat, unlike thermoelectric boxes which typically only cool 20-25°C below outside temperature. Whilst absorption cool boxes offer silent gas operation, they're sensitive to being level and struggle in hot weather. The MCCP-90's compressor works efficiently at extreme ambient temperatures, operates independently of inclination, and achieves genuine freezing temperatures that absorption and thermoelectric units cannot reliably deliver. Power consumption is also lower than thermoelectric alternatives of comparable size.
Will the Mestic MCCP-90 drain my leisure battery overnight?
The built-in battery protection system monitors voltage levels and automatically shuts down before draining your battery completely. Eco mode further reduces power consumption when running off 12V or 24V supplies. Actual power draw depends on ambient temperature, set temperature, and how often you open the lid, but compressor cool boxes are significantly more efficient than thermoelectric models. For extended off-grid use, pairing with adequate solar panels is recommended, as the unit is designed to work with solar setups.
Can both compartments be used as freezers simultaneously?
Yes, both zones can be set to freezing temperatures between -18°C and 0°C if needed, giving you 90 litres of freezer capacity. Alternatively, run both as refrigerators between 0°C and +10°C, or any combination in between. The independent digital controls for each compartment mean you can adjust settings based on what you're storing, making it adaptable for different trip requirements.
What size space do I need for the MCCP-90 in my caravan or motorhome?
The unit measures 97.3cm wide, 52.5cm deep, and 46.1cm tall, so you need just under a metre of floor space lengthwise. At 34.5kg, it requires a solid mounting location or secure positioning to prevent movement whilst travelling. The lid opens from both sides and can be fully removed, which helps with access in tight spaces, but you still need clearance above for opening. Measure your available area carefully, as this is a substantial unit designed for larger caravans and motorhomes rather than compact campervans.
How loud is the compressor when running?
Operating at 45dB, the MCCP-90 produces noise comparable to a quiet domestic fridge or a library environment. The compressor cycles on and off rather than running continuously, so it's not constant. Most users find it unobtrusive during the day, though light sleepers might notice it at night if positioned very close to sleeping areas. The low vibration design minimises additional noise from rattling, making it quieter than many older compressor models.
Do I need different cables for 12V and mains operation?
The MCCP-90 has integrated connections for both 12-24V DC and 100-240V AC operation, eliminating the need for separate adapters. The cables for both power sources should be included with the unit, allowing you to switch between leisure battery power whilst driving and mains hook-up at site without purchasing additional accessories. This dual voltage capability is built into the compressor system rather than requiring external conversion equipment.
What fits in each 45-litre compartment?
Each zone accommodates 1.5-litre bottles standing upright, which gives you an idea of the usable height. In practical terms, you can fit multiple days' worth of food for a family in one compartment whilst dedicating the other to frozen goods or extra refrigerated items. The removable wire baskets help organise smaller items and prevent them getting lost at the bottom. Total capacity of 90 litres across both zones makes this suitable for extended trips or larger groups where a single-zone cool box would be insufficient.
