Caravan Calendar: February Top Tips for Caravan Maintenance

Aha! February...the days are (thankfully) lengthening, toes are thawing out and the promise of spring peeks above the chilly ground. If you're not one of the hardy tourers who have been travelling the UK throughout the winter, snow shovel safely stored in the side locker, then you're probably just coming round from your winter hibernation. The excitement of another season of touring is beginning to tingle at the edges...

So, what should we be doing in February in our motorhomes and caravans to get them ready for the season ahead? Here are Leisureshopdirect's February Top Tips for caravan maintenance products and supplies.

Cushion Care

If you haven't already, it's time to check how your cushions and matresses are faring. To keep caravan repairs to a minimum, ensure that all your soft furnishings are stacked in such a way that there is air flow all around them. This will prevent mould growing on the material. Cushions left around the edges of a caravan are far more susceptible to damp.

So if you have no choice other than to leave your soft furnishings in your 'van over the winter, stacking them end-on in the centre of the living space is the best option.

Whenever you visit your resting 'van, don't forget to throw open the windows for a few minutes to allow the air to circulate. To further prevent damp from invading your caravan or motorhome a simple but effective precaution is to leave a bowl or two of salt around the interior to soak up any excess moisture.

Check Your Rooflights

February is a good time to take a careful look at your caravan or motorhome rooflights, which can take a battering over winter, unless your vehicle is kept undercover.

What should you be checking for? Make sure that they are still firmly fixed down so that no water or debris can enter the fabric of your 'van. You should also check that no cracks have appeared in the plastic domes, as although most rooflight covers are made from durable materials, prolonged exposure to light, heat and frost can cause damage.

And if you do find you have a problem? At Leisureshopdirect we have thousands of spares available for your motorhome and caravan repairs including a wide range of Rooflight spares and accessories.

Fire up your heater!

It might well have been a few months since you last fired up your heater, so February is a good time to check that all is in working order.

There's nothing more frustrating than finding that a major 'van component isn't working properly once you have already set off on your first trip of the season.

So, turn on the gas and light the fire for a few minutes to ensure that there are no dead flies or spiders webs forming on the burner.

During your February checks, if you should discover a part that needs replacing, you will more than likely find the spares you need to complete your caravan repairs on Leisureshopdirect.
