Product Description

The Fiamma Plastic Warning Sign (part number 98782-005) is a rear-mounted signal board designed for motorhomes, caravans, campervans, vans, and 4x4 vehicles carrying a bike rack or any load that protrudes beyond the rear bumper. Made from lightweight corrugated plastic with four corner reflectors, it measures 50cm x 50cm and meets the standard warning board specification used across Europe. It attaches through the four eyelet holes in each corner, or it slots straight into the clear transparent pocket on any Fiamma bike cover - no tools, no fuss.

The Fiamma Signal sign is used on motorhomes and caravans as a security measure to highlight the rear of any protruding items such as cycle racks.

Do you need a warning sign on a motorhome bike rack in Europe?

A rear warning sign is a legal requirement in Spain and several other European countries when carrying a bike rack or any protruding load. The Fiamma Plastic Warning Sign (98782-005) measures 50cm x 50cm with four corner reflectors and is accepted in Spain and most of Europe. For Italy, the Fiamma Aluminium Warning Sign is the approved version, as Italian law requires fully reflective coverage across the entire board surface.

A lot of people only think about this when they're already planning a trip, so it's worth knowing before you go. In Spain, a square red and white striped warning board is compulsory on anything overhanging the rear of the vehicle - that includes an empty bike rack as well as one with bikes on it. The plastic Fiamma version with its four reflectors satisfies the requirement in Spain and most other European countries. Italy is a different matter - Italian Ministry of Transport approval (Sait D.M. N°937-29-03-94) applies specifically to the Fiamma Aluminium Signal, making the plastic version unsuitable for legal compliance there. If you're heading to Italy, you need the aluminium version instead. One thing to note on orientation: when driving on the right-hand side of the road in Europe, the stripes should point down to the left (the offside of the vehicle). In the UK, they point up to the right.

The sign is lightweight enough to stow in a bag or the pocket of a bike cover when not in use, and setting it up takes seconds. It's the kind of accessory that stays out of the way until you need it, then does a straightforward job keeping you compliant and making the rear of your vehicle more visible to traffic behind - particularly at night or in poor light when the corner reflectors catch headlights from following vehicles.

Note the continental legislation states that these must be used for any/all over hanging items even empty bike racks should be marked using this type of board or similar. It is compulsary in Spain and Italy to use such signal boards. 50 x 50cm.

It is very flimsy being printed on corrugated plastic and the four reflectors are held on with a simple crimp (one of which had failed and it was loose in the box). I guess it does the job and keeps you legal but it could be better.

This really is very flimsy as others have said. I think you will be lucky to get it delivered without some bends in it. I have my doubts as to how many trips it will survive for but I'll update this review when I can give a factual answer to that. I guess the issue is that you certainly should have one of these for use in a number of countries and the aluminium version is definitely heavier and considerably more expensive - ho hum.

Just updated this - after 2.5k miles on the back of the van it looks better than I expected (though rather dirty). I'll update again if it last much better/worse.

I bought one of these last year to attach to a rear storage box on my motorhome, it did seem flimsy but I attached it with heavy duty velcro. It certainly stayed in place during a 3 month trip through France and Spain and remained in place until recently when I decided to remove it when I took the back box off for a more local holiday, it certainly took a lot of pulling to get it off! I am now going to buy a new one and hope it will last as long.

This product has had a bit of a slating by other reviewers. Firstly its Correx so will flex and should last a good while but not forever, But then again how long will it ever spend on the back of your vehicle. Secondly has 4 reflectors on it. Thirdly has eyelets to attach bungees etc.. Fourth All these things considered its blinking good value when you think postage and packing are included in the price, you couldn't even get one printed yourself on correx for that price. So to all the wingers about price and quality issues, you need a reality check its well worth the money.
