Jockey Wheels are designed to help 'jockey' a trailer or caravan into place, hence the name. Usually located at the front near the hitch, they retract when not in use, as they are not designed to be load bearing. So, when the trailer or caravan is hitched up and being moved, the Jockey wheel simply lifts up and out of the way.

This type of wheel can be found in two different styles: A soft, pneumatic tire, (easier to roll on a soft surface) or a solid rubber or plastic tire, (easier on hard surfaces.)
A jockey wheel makes it much easier to hook the tow vehicle onto the trailer, as it allows for height adjustment, and small movements to make lining up the hitch to the tow ball a very simple procedure.
