Noseweight is one of those things every caravanner knows they should check, but far too many get wrong — often because their gauge is giving them a false reading. The Milenco Precision Calibrated Noseweight Gauge (product code 2691) is the only noseweight gauge approved and calibrated to British Standard BS7961, the UK standard written specifically for these instruments. That matters because the Camping and Caravan Club conducted studies on gauges widely available at the time and found most were only accurate to within 12kg — and became far less reliable the more they were used. Milenco developed this gauge in direct response to that problem, using materials specifically chosen to hold calibration accurately even after 1,000 uses. The scale runs up to 130kg and reads to within 2kg as required by BS7961.

Why does calibration accuracy matter on a caravan noseweight gauge?

Calibration accuracy matters because an inaccurate gauge gives you false confidence. Many standard spring-based gauges soften with use — particularly those built with piano wire — and read progressively lower than the actual noseweight. That means you could be running a dangerously high noseweight without knowing it. The Milenco 2691 is manufactured using unique materials that resist this drift, staying accurate to within 2kg across its full 130kg range and through 1,000 uses. Other gauges have been shown to be up to 30kg out at that point.

The gauge is built to the correct height to sit directly under a standard caravan hitch without needing to be blocked up — a detail that matters both for convenience and for measurement accuracy, since height affects the reading. The large, clear scale is easy to read at a glance, and a storage bag is included to protect it between uses. In use, you position the caravan on a level, firm surface with the handbrake on and corner steadies raised, raise the jockey wheel to insert the gauge under the hitch, then wind the jockey wheel until it takes the full downward load. The reading you get is your noseweight. Adjust your loading — moving heavier items forward to increase it, or rearward to reduce it — until you're within your car's towball limit. Most caravan manufacturers recommend a noseweight of 5% to 7% of the laden caravan weight, typically between 75kg and 100kg for a standard touring outfit.

This is a product used by new caravanners who want a proper tool from the start, and experienced tourers who've learned that cheaper gauges are unreliable over time. It's also widely used for trailers and boat trailers, not just caravans. If you're checking noseweight on anything towed on a standard car tow ball — rated to 3,500kg gross train weight or less — this gauge covers the job. Compact enough to store in a locker or storage bag, and light enough to carry without thinking about it.

Milenco's Noseweight Gauge is approved and calibrated to the British standard for these instruments, the only onem that is. It offers calibrated precision, accuracy, reliability and technical superiority over other Noseweight Gauges. It has a clear large scale to ensure the precise and safe loading for this safety critical area, to ensure Caravan stability when towing.

The Camping and Caravan Club conducted a study on Noseweight Gauges and found them to be inaccurate and unreliable. They then approached Milenco and asked if we could produce a Noseweight Gauge to the standard BS7961, which was written in 2004. At this time no one had produced a conforming gauge to the standard. Milenco conducted studies on the available Noseweight Gauges and at best found them only accurate within 12kilos but more concerning is that they found these Noseweight Gauges often became ridiculously inaccurate with use.

The Milenco Precision Calibrated Noseweight Gauge has been manufactured using unique materials so that its calibration remains accurate even after 1000 uses. Other Noseweight Gauges can be up to 30 kilos out after 1000 uses. Another improvement Milenco have made is that the scale is much clearer and goes up to 130 kilos and is accurate to within 2 kilos (as required by BS7961).

Further improvements include the fact we made the Noseweight Gauge the same height as your caravan, so you do not need to block it up to use it. This Gauge costs a few pounds more, but you are getting real value for money and something that works correctly, exactly to the standard.

We think this is far better than something that can be potentially dangerous, as you can end up with a low Noseweight, which is the trend with the un-calibrated Noseweight Gauges as the springs soften with use especially those using piano wire.

I'm very happy with it as it was advertised as a calibrated gauge (to a British Standard). I prefer to use this than the stick and bathroom scale method.
It can never be perfect nose weight, as not a lot of road/driveways etc., surfaces are perfectly level and the gauge length should match the height of the tow ball on your towing vehicle.
However, this device provides me with a good "gauge" as to the nose weight and the opportunity to adjust the position of 'stuff' in the van, before starting the journey should I feel its necessary. I'm happy with my purchase as its quite light to be stowed in the caravan.

It appears to work as expected. We did use a friend's to check how accurate it is and the measurements on each guage were very similar. This is not a precision instrument but does offer a good level of confidence that we are not overloading the front of the van - hence the 5* rating.

Haven't had a chance to calibrate, but 1st weight was in the expected ball-park. Instructions say to use on level ground, but camper is parked on a sideways slope, and scale has small base, so stability wasn't 100% (thus the 3 star rating for that attribute). Developers should have a method to deal with the fact that the whole earth isn't level :-)
