The Provence Hybrid puts two separate heat sources inside one cast iron stove. A 4kW real flame gas fire sits behind the glass door with a synthetic log set, and a 2kW electric fan heater is built into the same body, giving a combined 6kW rating. It measures 824mm high, 460mm wide and 520mm deep, rolls on fitted castors, and holds a butane cylinder of between 5kg and 15kg out of sight behind a lift-off back panel. It needs no flue, no chimney and no mains gas connection, so all the heat produced by the burner stays in the room.

Should you run the Provence Hybrid on gas or electric?

Use the gas fire for main heating. It gives 4kW gross from a butane cylinder, with high and low flame settings, and works without mains power. Use the 2kW electric side for a faster top-up wherever a socket is in reach, at 1kW or 2kW. Running both together reaches the full 6kW.

The Provence has been one of our most popular heaters. Buyers point to the same handful of reasons: a real flame behind glass, cast iron weight, a gas bottle hidden inside the body and warmth in minutes. The Hybrid keeps every one of those and adds the 2kW fan heater on top, so one stove covers a mild evening in October, a cold snap in January and the days when the mains power drops out.

Conservatories, garden rooms, home offices, workshops and older cottages suit this style of stove, warming one room properly while the central heating stays off. The gas controls sit under the lift-up lid, where a single knob covers the pilot setting, low flame and high flame, with a battery spark button alongside. The electric dial turns anti-clockwise for fan only on low or high, and clockwise for 1kW or 2kW of heat. Both heat settings bring the fan in automatically on low, so warm air travels out into the room rather than gathering around the stove.

Room size matters with any flueless appliance. Universal Innovations specifies a minimum room volume of 64 cubic metres, 80 square centimetres of purpose-provided ventilation and 0.6m of clearance above and to the sides. At maximum flame the burner uses 290g of butane an hour, which works out at roughly 51 hours of continuous full-output running from a 15kg cylinder. Flame failure protection and an oxygen depletion system are fitted, the glass door doubles as a guard, and the stove carries a 2 year manufacturer guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Provence Hybrid and the standard Provence gas heater?
The Hybrid adds a built-in 2kW electric fan heater and raises the gas burner to 4kW gross, giving a 6kW combined rating. The standard Provence runs on gas alone at 3.4kW gross. The Hybrid stands slightly taller at 824mm against 775mm, and uses a 1mm injector in place of the 0.9mm injector fitted to the 3.4kW model.
Do the gas fire and the electric fan heater work at the same time?
Yes. The two sides have separate controls, and the 6kW figure quoted by Universal Innovations is the total of the 4kW gas burner and the 2kW electric heater running together. The fan also works on its own on a low or high setting, which moves warm air out from the gas fire without adding electric heat.
What size gas cylinder does the Provence Hybrid take?
Butane cylinders from 5kg minimum to 15kg maximum, supplied at 28 to 30 mbar. The cylinder sits inside the stove body behind the lift-off back panel, so nothing is on show. The appliance is set for butane only under gas category I3B(28-30) and uses a 40cm LPG hose to EN 16436-1. In the UK, 7kg and 15kg butane cylinders are the usual choices.
How long does a 15kg butane cylinder last in the Provence Hybrid?
The burner uses up to 290g of butane an hour at maximum flame. A 15kg cylinder holds 15,000g, which gives roughly 51 hours of continuous running at full output, and longer again on the low flame setting. A 7kg cylinder works out at around 24 hours at full output. Both figures are calculated from the manufacturer's published gas consumption rating.
What size room does the Provence Hybrid need?
Universal Innovations sets a minimum room volume of 64 cubic metres with at least 80 square centimetres of purpose-provided ventilation, which suits a large lounge, conservatory, garden room or workshop. The stove is designed for indoor use on a flat, level surface, with 0.6m of clearance above and to the sides. The manufacturer's instructions exclude bedrooms, bathrooms, shower rooms, basements and leisure vehicles.
Does the Provence Hybrid work in a power cut?
The gas fire works without mains electricity. Ignition comes from a spark button powered by a single AAA battery, and the burner draws butane from the cylinder inside the stove. The electric fan heater and the fan-only settings need a 220 to 240V mains supply, so those functions resume once power returns.
What setup does the Provence Hybrid need before first use?
Four steps: fit the cylinder brackets to the base with the five screws supplied, place the synthetic logs on the grate, refit the back panel and connect the regulator and hose to the cylinder. Test every gas connection with leak detection fluid or soapy water. On first lighting, run the stove on its highest setting in a well ventilated space for four hours to cure the logs.
What warranty comes with the Provence Hybrid?
Universal Innovations covers the stove with a 2 year guarantee for proper use in Great Britain and Ireland, and the guarantee leaves your statutory rights unaffected. The manufacturer recommends a service by a qualified, competent registered gas engineer before the start of every heating season.
