Every caravan and motorhome running on propane needs a pigtail hose to link the gas bottle to the regulator system. The Crusader 750mm version with M20 fitting works with the fixed regulators fitted to most leisure vehicles built from 2004 onwards, making it the go-to replacement when yours is due for changing. At 750mm, it's long enough to give you some flexibility in positioning your bottle without stretching tight or leaving excessive slack that could kink.
Built from high-pressure propane rubber with stainless steel fittings, it's designed to handle the demands of running your cooker, heating and hot water off the gas system. It meets BS 3212 standards, which is what your habitation service inspector will check for. The main thing to know about these hoses is they're a five-year replacement item regardless of condition, because the rubber compounds break down gradually from pressure cycling and temperature swings, even when the hose looks perfectly fine on the outside.
Installation needs a 27mm spanner and takes minutes. Start by hand-tightening the M20 nut onto your regulator to get the threads engaged properly, then firm it up with the spanner. The seal comes from a compression washer in the fitting, so you don't need any tape or paste. After fitting, turn the gas on and spray soapy water on both connections to check for leaks. Bubbles mean you need to tighten further or check the seal washer. If you're not comfortable with gas work, have someone who knows what they're doing fit it.

Frequently Asked Questions
You need a 27mm spanner to properly tighten the M20 nut fitting on this pigtail hose. Hand-tighten first to align the threads correctly, then use the spanner to secure it firmly. The M20 refers to the thread size, whilst the hexagonal nut requires a 27mm spanner.
Replace your propane pigtail hose every five years regardless of its appearance. The rubber compounds degrade over time even when not in use, and the hose experiences constant pressure cycles when you're running gas appliances. Mark the installation date on the hose with a permanent marker so you know when it's due for replacement. Check it annually for cracks, bulges, or perishing, and replace immediately if you spot any damage.
The 750mm length fits most caravan and motorhome gas lockers built from 2004 onwards with Euro regulators. Measure from your regulator outlet to where your gas bottle sits to confirm. If your regulator sits particularly high or your locker is unusually deep, you might need a different length. The hose shouldn't be stretched tight or have excessive slack and kinking.
M20 pigtails have a threaded nut fitting that screws directly onto fixed central regulators or changeover valves commonly found in caravans from 2004 onwards. The 8mm pigtails use push-fit or jubilee clip connections for older portable regulators. Check your regulator type before ordering. If you have a fixed bulkhead-mounted regulator with threaded outlets, you need M20 fittings.
This hose connects to propane bottles only. Butane and propane use different regulator pressures and bottle valve types. Propane operates at higher pressure and uses different thread specifications on the bottle valve. If you run butane, you need butane-specific pigtails and a regulator set for 28-30 mbar output rather than propane's 37 mbar.
BS 3212 is the British Standard for flexible rubber tubing and hose assemblies for liquefied petroleum gases. Hoses meeting this standard have been tested for pressure resistance, flexibility at low temperatures, resistance to gas permeation, and flame resistance. Using BS 3212 compliant hoses is a legal requirement for LPG installations in UK leisure vehicles and passing your habitation service check.
Don't use PTFE tape on M20 pigtail fittings. These connections use compression seals or rubber washers to create the gas-tight seal, and adding tape interferes with how the threads engage. The tape can also shred and block regulator valves. If your connection leaks after tightening properly, replace the seal washer rather than adding tape.
Mix washing-up liquid with water in a spray bottle and spray all connections whilst the gas is turned on. Bubbles indicate a leak. Check both the M20 connection to your regulator and the connection to your gas bottle. Tighten any leaking joints further, or if they continue leaking, turn off the gas and inspect the seal washers for damage. Never use a naked flame to test for leaks.
