The Outwell Contour Lux is a reversible three-season sleeping bag that changes its temperature rating depending which side you sleep on. Turn it one way and you get a comfort temperature of 3°C, flip it over and you're rated down to 15°C. This dual-sided design uses different densities of Isofill recycled polyester filling on each face, giving you proper flexibility without carrying two separate bags. The L size fits users up to 190cm tall and measures 220 x 85cm when laid flat, providing enough room to shift position during the night without feeling restricted.

The built-in pillow removes completely when you don't need it, and the hood zips off entirely for warmer nights. You can open the full-length L-shaped zip to use it as a duvet, or connect two left-zip and right-zip bags together to create a double. The 230T microfibre polyester shell resists moisture from tent condensation, while the 190T brushed lining feels soft against skin. Outwell includes corner loops for attaching a liner, a full-length zip baffle to prevent cold spots, and a compression sack that packs down to 42 x 24cm. The auto-lock zip prevents accidental opening during the night.

This sleeping bag suits spring through autumn camping in the UK, including cooler highland sites and late-season trips. The 1.7kg weight makes it reasonable for car camping or short walks to pitch, though it's heavier than backpacking-specific bags. Being PFAS-free means no forever chemicals in the water-resistant treatment, which matters if you're concerned about environmental impact. The recycled polyester filling won't match down for warmth-to-weight ratio, but it performs better when damp and costs considerably less. Worth noting that the reversible feature only works if you remember which side is which before getting in, as the shell colours differ slightly but not dramatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the reversible temperature rating work on the Contour Lux?
The Outwell Contour Lux uses different densities of Isofill recycled polyester filling on each side. One face has more insulation for cold conditions, giving a comfort temperature of 3°C when that side faces up. Turn the bag over and the less dense side provides a 15°C comfort rating for milder nights. The shell fabric looks similar on both sides with slight colour variation, so you need to check which way round you're getting in before zipping up for the night.
Can two Contour Lux sleeping bags zip together to make a double?
Two Contour Lux bags connect together but you need one left-zip and one right-zip version. The L-shaped zips run the full length and join at the bottom to create a double sleeping bag measuring approximately 220cm x 170cm. Both bags must be the same size and model to zip together properly. When connected you can still use the reversible temperature feature by coordinating which sides face up on both bags.
What does PFAS free mean for this sleeping bag?
PFAS free means Outwell doesn't use per and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the water-resistant treatment on the Contour Lux shell fabric. PFAS are synthetic chemicals that persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, earning them the name forever chemicals. The 230T microfibre polyester shell still resists moisture from tent condensation without these compounds, though the water resistance may not last as long as PFAS-treated fabrics and requires more frequent reproofing.
How small does the Contour Lux pack down for storage?
The Contour Lux compresses to 42cm x 24cm in the supplied compression sack. This packed size works for car camping and short walks to your pitch, fitting in most car boots alongside other camping equipment. At 1.7kg the weight suits weekend camping rather than backpacking trips where every gram counts. The compression sack uses a cap design that you stuff the bag into, then compress using the attached straps.
What height person fits in the Outwell Contour Lux L size?
The L size Contour Lux fits people up to 190cm tall. The bag measures 220cm long by 85cm wide when laid flat, leaving 30cm of length for the built-in pillow and foot space. Taller users above 190cm will find their feet pressed against the bottom or the hood won't sit properly around their head. The 85cm width provides enough room to shift position during the night without the fabric pulling tight across shoulders when you turn over.
Does the Contour Lux work for winter camping in the UK?
The Contour Lux rates as a three-season bag for spring, summer and autumn camping. The coldest comfort temperature of 3°C on the cold side covers mild winter nights in southern England but won't keep you warm enough for proper winter camping in Scotland or highland areas. The limit temperature for men drops to -3°C on the cold side, which represents survival conditions rather than comfortable sleep. For December through February camping you need a proper four-season bag rated to lower temperatures.
How does recycled polyester filling compare to down insulation?
The 1400g of Isofill recycled polyester filling in the Contour Lux weighs more than equivalent down insulation for the same temperature rating. Polyester maintains insulation when damp from tent condensation or rain, while down clumps and loses warming ability when wet. Polyester costs less than down and continues working after multiple washes, though it compresses larger and adds more weight to your pack. For UK camping where dampness is common, synthetic filling like Isofill offers practical advantages over down despite the weight penalty.
What happens when you remove the pillow and hood from the Contour Lux?
The built-in pillow unclips completely from the bag when you don't need it, leaving a flat opening at the top. The hood zips off entirely around its attachment point, converting the bag to a simpler rectangular shape for warm summer nights. Removing both components reduces bulk and weight when packing, and stops you overheating when temperatures stay above 15°C. The pillow and hood store in the compression sack with the main bag so you don't lose them between trips.
