The Vango Denali Pro 60:70S sits in that sweet spot between weekend trips and proper multi-day expeditions. Built around Vango's A1 back system, you can adjust the fit with one hand whilst wearing it - something you'll appreciate when you're stood on a hillside trying to get comfortable before tackling the descent. The system uses two body-contoured alloy bars that lock into place, and this S size works for back lengths between 46-56cm (measure from your hip bone to the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck).

Construction combines Excel Eco 250D ripstop polyester on the main body with heavier 600D recycled fabric in high-wear areas. The ripstop pattern stops tears spreading if you snag it on branches or rock, whilst the 600D sections handle abrasion from repeated packing and unpacking. You'll find the pro-weave side pockets particularly useful - they're made from stretchy material that sits flat when empty but expands to hold water bottles or wet layers. There's a proper waterproof compartment sized for OS maps, a detachable rain cover stored in the base, and the top lid includes both external and internal zip pockets for items you need quickly.

The harness uses AirMesh padding on the shoulder straps to reduce sweat build-up, paired with an ergonomic hip belt that does the actual load-carrying work. Hip belt pockets are water-resistant rather than waterproof, so don't rely on them for your phone in heavy rain. Compression straps on both sides stabilise the load, there's a hydration sleeve inside that fits most bladders, and attachment points for ice axes or walking poles. The optional drawcord divider lets you separate clean kit from dirty, or keep your sleeping bag away from cooking gear. Capacity sits at 60 litres with the ability to extend to 70 litres when you need extra room for winter gear or longer trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the S size Denali Pro will fit me?
Measure your back length from your hip bone to the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck. The S size fits backs between 46-56cm. If you're close to 56cm, consider the regular size instead. The A1 adjustment system gives you some flexibility within this range, but starting with the correct base size makes a significant difference to comfort on longer walks.
What's the practical difference between 60 and 70 litre capacity?
The base capacity is 60 litres, which handles most weekend trips and 3-4 day expeditions with careful packing. Extending to 70 litres means loosening the compression straps and using the full height of the main compartment. You'll use the extra 10 litres for bulkier winter gear like insulated jackets and sleeping bags, or when carrying additional food for longer trips. The pack maintains its shape better at 60 litres.
Can I adjust the A1 back system whilst wearing the rucksack?
Yes, that's the main advantage of the A1 system. Loosen the adjustment strap, slide the harness up or down the alloy bars until it sits at the right height, then pull the strap tight to lock it. You can do this whilst the pack is loaded and on your back. Check the shoulder fit guide on the harness to confirm you've got it positioned correctly - the shoulder straps should curve over your shoulders without gaps.
Will the rain cover keep everything completely dry?
The included rain cover protects the main body of the rucksack from heavy rain and increases visibility with its bright colour. Pack critical items like sleeping bags and spare clothes in dry bags inside the rucksack for proper waterproof protection. The rain cover won't stop water seeping through the zip areas during prolonged downpours, and it can catch wind on exposed ridges. The waterproof map compartment on the front offers better protection for documents and electronics.
What hydration bladders fit the Denali Pro sleeve?
Most 2-3 litre hydration bladders from brands like Camelbak, Platypus, and Source fit the internal sleeve. The sleeve sits against your back with the drinking tube exiting near your shoulder. A 3 litre bladder works best for day walks, whilst a 2 litre leaves more room for other gear on overnight trips. The sleeve has a hanging loop at the top, so your bladder needs a compatible hook or you'll need to improvise with the bladder's own straps.
How do the pro-weave side pockets work compared to standard mesh?
Pro-weave material stretches to hold bottles and layers but collapses flat when empty, keeping the pack's profile narrow on technical ground. Standard mesh pockets always protrude, catching on vegetation and rock. The trade-off is durability - mesh shows damage immediately but keeps working, whilst pro-weave can develop small tears that spread if you're rough with it. These pockets work brilliantly for water bottles up to 1 litre and wet waterproofs you've stuffed away during a climb.
Where should I pack heavy items in the Denali Pro?
Place your heaviest items close to your back and level with your shoulder blades. This positions the weight over your hips where the padded belt transfers the load to your legs. Put your sleeping bag and light items at the bottom, heavy gear like food and cooking equipment in the middle against your back, and items you'll need during the day near the top or in the lid. The optional drawcord divider helps separate bottom and top sections whilst maintaining this weight distribution.
What's the actual purpose of the emergency whistle on the sternum strap?
The whistle provides a way to signal for help without draining phone batteries or shouting yourself hoarse. Six short blasts repeated after a minute is the international distress signal in the UK mountains. It's positioned on the sternum strap so you can reach it even if you're injured or your pack has shifted. Tests show these whistles carry further than shouting, particularly in wind and rain when sound doesn't travel well.
