The Vango Driveaway Twin Kit bridges the gap between your motorhome's awning rail and your driveaway awning, letting you detach and drive off without dismantling everything. It's built around a Figure of 8 connector system that slides onto your awning's tunnel section, then simultaneously locks into both the supplied Kador strip and your vehicle's existing 4mm or 6mm rail. This 3-metre kit suits most small to mid-sized driveaway awnings, and you can trim both the Figure of 8 sections and Kador strip to match your exact requirements.

When you're ready to explore, you loosen the front webbing straps, slide out the Figure of 8 connector with the Kador strip still attached, and roll the tunnel section away. Your awning stays upright on its own frame while you head to the beach or nearest shop. Reconnecting takes about the same time as setting up a basic windbreak - just reverse the process when you get back. The twin rail compatibility means it works with the most common aftermarket awning rails fitted to panel vans and coachbuilt motorhomes.

You'll need an existing C-profile awning rail fitted to your vehicle before this kit can do its job. The supplied components replace the standard beading that usually slides into your awning tunnel, so there's a bit of threading involved during initial setup. Most people find the Figure of 8 sections slide more smoothly if you apply a light spray of silicone lubricant first, though Vango doesn't include this in the kit. Once you've got everything threaded correctly, the attachment and detachment process becomes straightforward enough to manage on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 4mm and 6mm awning rails and how does this kit work with both?
The measurements refer to the internal channel width of the C-profile rail fitted to your motorhome. 4mm rails were standard on older conversions and some budget installations, whilst 6mm became more common from around 2010 onwards. The Vango twin kit includes Figure of 8 connectors designed to grip securely in either size, so you don't need to measure your rail before ordering. The connector's profile is slim enough for 4mm channels but has sufficient grip edges to lock firmly into 6mm rails without rattling.
Can I leave the Figure of 8 sections permanently attached to my awning tunnel?
Yes, most motorhome owners thread the Figure of 8 connectors onto the awning tunnel and leave them in place between trips. This saves time during setup since you only need to slide the combined unit into your vehicle's rail rather than threading everything from scratch. When you pack the awning away, the Figure of 8 sections fold flat inside the tunnel and add minimal bulk to your storage bag. Just make sure they're completely dry before storage to prevent any mildew forming in the trapped areas.
How do I know if 3 metres will be enough for my driveaway awning?
Check the connection width measurement in your awning's specifications - this tells you how much tunnel needs to attach to your vehicle. Most small driveaway awnings designed for panel vans use between 2 and 2.5 metres of connection width, whilst larger family models might need the full 3 metres. The Vango kit can be trimmed down with heavy-duty scissors or a Stanley knife if you've got excess length, but you can't extend it if you've cut too much off. Measure your awning tunnel from grommet to grommet where it meets the vehicle, then add 10 centimetres for adjustment room.
Will this kit work with Fiamma, Omnistor or Thule awning rails already fitted to my motorhome?
The kit works with standard C-profile awning rails regardless of manufacturer, which covers the rails typically used for driveaway awning mounting. It won't fit into the deeper rails used for Fiamma or Thule box awnings, since those have different internal profiles designed for their specific adapter systems. If you've got a separate rail fitted specifically for a driveaway awning - usually mounted lower on the vehicle side - the Vango kit will work fine. Check your rail accepts standard beading or Kador strip before ordering.
Does the Kador strip need to run the full 3 metres or can I use shorter sections?
The Kador strip should run continuously along your entire connection width for proper stability. Using shorter sections or leaving gaps creates weak points where wind can get underneath the tunnel and cause flapping or stress on the fabric. The supplied 3-metre length can be trimmed to match your exact requirements once you've done a test fit. Some people mark their ideal length with tape during the first setup, then cut everything to size before their next trip out.
What happens if I can't find my exact parking spot when I return to reattach the awning?
Most driveaway awnings have enough give in their tunnel sections to accommodate being 20 to 30 centimetres off your original position. The fabric stretches slightly and the webbing straps provide adjustment range for minor positioning differences. If you're more than half a metre out, you'll likely need to reposition your vehicle more precisely. Experienced motorhomers often place a small marker or take a photo of their wheel position relative to a site feature before driving away, which makes lining up much simpler when you get back.
