Alde Auto Air Vent Observations

A very expensive Alde part for what it is. The same type of component as fitted to central heating boilers at home, at less than £10 in some cases. Mine failed at 2 years on a 2022 Swift Elegance 850. Symptoms are loss of heating fluid with no sign of leak and no antifreeze smell. It leaks out of its black outlet tube to beneath the caravan, so no sweet antifreeze smell. It's not a unique problem as Alde themselves suggest shocking it with a rubber mallet to seal it up if it leaks. That didn't work for me unfortunately, so I chose to replace it. You can bung up the tube with a suitable plug, but you loose the auto vent facility then so in the end I reluctantly chose to replace it. To change it is easy enough, you will lose some fluid to towels wrapped around it but nowhere near the amount you would lose if you leave it leaking over time. I took the old one apart and found that it's a simple float that moves a sprung lever that in turn opens or closes the outlet. After blowing the outlet clear and a silicone spray it is now working again. This fault is clearly caused by debris in the heating system left during manafacture, as the antifreeze comes absolutely clean. Whether that's an Alde problem or a Swift problem is anyone's guess. I could have had it sorted under warranty but I just couldn't face taking my awning down again and towing the van to the dealers, as it's seasonally pitched and no small task to move. works, but so did the original for 4 years before it started leaking, we will have to wait and see how long this one lasts. Can only give it 3 stars because of the problem with the old one.
