The Outwell Denver 5 is a three-room tunnel tent that sleeps five people across two bedrooms and a proper living area. Built around the PowerTec fibreglass pole system, it uses square pole segments rather than traditional round ones, giving you 40% better performance when wind picks up. The flysheet uses Outtex 4000 Select polyester with PFAS-free water repellency and a 4000mm hydrostatic head, while the sewn-in groundsheet is double-coated waterproof polyethylene. At 25.7kg with a pack size of 76 x 38 x 36 cm, it's substantial but manageable for family camping trips where you're not hiking to your pitch.

What sets this tent apart is the integrated Outwell Light System, a patent-pending design that provides dimmable LED lighting throughout the living area. You'll need to supply your own USB-C power source (a portable battery pack works well), but once connected, you get proper functional lighting without messing about with lanterns or torches. The Dark Premier Bedrooms use blackout fabric to help kids (and adults) sleep past dawn, while mesh panels behind both doors let you control ventilation without inviting midges inside. The front canopy has roll-back sides that protect the entrance when weather turns but fold away when conditions improve.

Outwell quote 9 minutes to get weather-tight and 21 minutes for a complete pitch, which is realistic with two people who've practised once or twice. You can pitch flysheet first in rain or everything together in dry conditions. The vertical front wall maximises headroom in the living area, and the warm-toned flysheet roof creates a brighter internal space than darker tents. Worth noting that the integrated light system adds complexity compared to simpler tents, and you'll need to budget for a decent USB-C power bank if you don't already own one. The tent carries UPF 30+ UV protection and includes pegs, repair kit, and hooktrack hooks in the package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Outwell Denver 5 come with the USB-C power source for the integrated lighting?
No, the Denver 5 does not include a USB-C power source. The integrated Outwell Light System requires you to supply your own USB-C power bank or compatible portable battery. Most standard portable chargers with USB-C output will work, and a 10,000-20,000mAh power bank typically provides several nights of lighting depending on brightness settings used.
How waterproof is the Outwell Denver 5 tent?
The Denver 5 flysheet has a 4000mm hydrostatic head rating, which provides excellent waterproof performance for UK camping conditions including heavy rain. The flysheet uses Outtex 4000 Select polyester with PFAS-free water repellency treatment, and the sewn-in groundsheet is double-coated waterproof polyethylene. This combination keeps you dry in sustained wet weather when pitched correctly with guy lines tensioned properly.
What are PowerTec poles and how do they differ from standard fibreglass poles?
PowerTec poles use square cross-section segments instead of traditional round fibreglass poles. The square shape provides 40% better structural performance in windy conditions compared to round poles of similar diameter. This design distributes stress more evenly across the pole structure, reducing flex and improving stability when weather turns rough. The poles still use standard shock cord construction for easy assembly.
How long does it take to pitch the Denver 5 with two people?
Outwell states 9 minutes to get the tent weather-tight and 21 minutes for complete pitching including all pegs, guy lines, and interior setup. These timings are realistic with two people who have pitched the tent once or twice before. First-time setup will take longer as you familiarise yourself with the pole system and peg points. You can pitch flysheet first if rain is approaching or pitch everything together in dry conditions.
What is the pack size and weight of the Denver 5?
The Denver 5 weighs 25.7kg and packs down to 76 x 38 x 36 cm. This makes it suitable for car camping, caravan awning alternatives, and festival camping where you park close to your pitch. The weight and pack size mean it's not ideal for backpacking or situations where you need to carry the tent long distances from your vehicle.
Do the Dark Premier Bedrooms in the Denver 5 completely block light?
The Dark Premier Bedrooms use blackout fabric technology that blocks most external light, helping occupants sleep past dawn during summer months when sunrise happens early. They don't create complete darkness like a blackout blind indoors would, but they significantly reduce light transmission compared to standard tent bedroom fabric. This feature is particularly helpful for families with young children or anyone who struggles to sleep when it's light outside.
Can you pitch the Denver 5 flysheet first in wet weather?
Yes, the Denver 5 supports flysheet-first pitching, which means you can erect the outer tent first during rain to keep the inner tents and living area dry. This pitching method is particularly useful when arriving at site during wet weather or when rain is forecast. You can also pitch the tent as one complete unit in dry conditions, which is faster when weather permits.
What comes included with the Outwell Denver 5?
The Denver 5 includes all pegs needed for pitching, a repair kit for emergency fixes, 5 hooktrack hooks for the pole system, and a carrybag for storage and transport. The tent itself comprises the flysheet with integrated lighting system, sewn-in groundsheet, two inner bedroom tents, and the PowerTec fibreglass pole set. Guy lines are attached. You need to supply your own USB-C power source for the lighting system.
