  Product Description
The Outwell Wakefield Shelter XL gives you a proper outdoor living space that stands up on its own without guy ropes getting in the way. At 20.9kg it's not the lightest shelter you'll carry, but that weight comes from the robust Outtex 1500 Pro Silver polyester fabric that actually keeps water out when the weather turns. The single-pole pitching system means one person can get this up in about 10 minutes once you've done it a couple of times, though having a mate hold the corners steady definitely helps on breezy days.

What makes this shelter work for family camping is the generous headroom and that massive entrance height. You're not constantly ducking under the edge like you do with cheaper models. The UPF 50+ rating (upgraded from the 30+ mentioned in some specs) blocks harmful UV rays during those hot summer afternoons when you're sat outside reading or watching the kids play. The apex vent stops condensation building up, and those mesh storage pockets are brilliant for keeping sun cream, insect spray and car keys where you can find them. The silver coating reflects heat rather than absorbing it, which genuinely makes a difference when the sun's beating down.

This shelter measures 84 x 30 x 20cm when packed, so it will fit alongside your tent and other gear nicely. The 1500mm hydrostatic head handles moderate rain fine, but prolonged heavy downpours might eventually find their way through since this isn't a fully waterproof awning. It works brilliantly as a cooking area, extra seating space or shelter for muddy boots and wet gear. Outwell have used PFAS-free water repellency treatment, which matters if you care about environmental impact. The freestanding design means you can pitch it on hard standing where pegs won't go in, though you'll want to peg it down properly when wind picks up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Wakefield Shelter XL and regular camping gazebos?
The Wakefield Shelter XL uses a single-pole freestanding design rather than multiple poles and guy ropes. This means it pitches faster and works on hard standing pitches where standard gazebos need pegs. The Outtex 1500 Pro fabric offers better water resistance than typical gazebo materials, and the apex vent prevents condensation build-up during overnight use.
How does the freestanding design work in windy conditions?
The shelter stands up without guy ropes through its structural pole system and sturdy frame. On calm days it stays put through weight alone, but you need to peg it down when wind picks up. The included pegs anchor it securely to grass or soft ground. For hard standing pitches, you'll need to use the shelter's weight and possibly add weights to the base points.
Will the 1500mm hydrostatic head keep me dry in British weather?
The 1500mm hydrostatic head handles moderate rain and typical British showers without problems. During prolonged heavy downpours lasting several hours, water might eventually seep through since this rating sits below fully waterproof awning standards. The shelter works best for daytime use as a covered cooking and seating area rather than as overnight sleeping accommodation during storms.
What does UPF 50+ protection mean for camping use?
UPF 50+ blocks over 98% of UV radiation from the sun. This protection rating matters during long summer camping trips when you're spending hours sat outside. The silver coating on the Outtex fabric reflects UV rays rather than letting them through, reducing sun exposure and keeping the space underneath cooler compared to standard shelter fabrics.
How long does single-pole pitching take for one person?
First-time pitch takes around 15-20 minutes as you work out the system. After a couple of practice runs, one person pitches this in about 10 minutes. Having someone hold the corners steady speeds things up on breezy days and reduces frustration. The single-pole design means fewer components to assemble compared to traditional multi-pole shelters.
What does PFAS-free water repellency mean?
Outwell's PFAS-free water repellency uses alternative treatments instead of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS chemicals persist in the environment and accumulate in water systems. The PFAS-free treatment still repels water and maintains the fabric's weather resistance while reducing environmental impact. Performance remains comparable to traditional treatments for camping use.
How much boot space does the packed shelter take?
Packed dimensions measure 84 x 30 x 20cm, taking up significant boot space in most cars. At 20.9kg, it needs two people to lift comfortably from the car to your pitch. You'll need to plan your packing carefully around this bag, especially when travelling with a full family tent, sleeping bags, and camping equipment. Estate cars and SUVs accommodate it more easily than hatchbacks.
What camping activities suits the Wakefield Shelter XL best?
This shelter excels as a covered cooking area where you prep meals protected from sun and light rain. It provides excellent seating space for families eating meals outside or playing board games. The mesh storage pockets keep camping essentials organized and accessible. Many campers use it to store muddy boots, wet coats, and outdoor gear overnight while keeping their tent interior clean and dry.
