Thetford Porta Potti Toilets

The Thetford Porta Potti range covers self-contained portable toilets that work without any plumbing, drainage or mains water connection. The collection brings together the 100 Series (Qube 145 and 165), the 300 Series (Qube 335, 345 and 365), and the 500 Series Excellence (565P manual and 565E electric flush), alongside Thetford carry bags, hold-down kits and replacement parts. Each unit has a sealed flush water tank on top and a detachable waste-holding tank below, which lifts off with a quick-release catch for emptying at any chemical disposal point. They're used in touring caravans, campervans, motorhomes, boats, festival tents, awning toilet tents, garden offices and as backup toilets at home during renovations.

What size Porta Potti do I need?

Choose by waste tank size and seat height. The 335 is the smallest at 313mm tall with a 10-litre waste tank, designed to fit under campervan rear seats. The 145 and 345 stand at 330mm with a 12-litre waste tank for short trips. The 165 and 365 share the same 330mm height but hold 21 litres of waste, giving around 56 flushes between empties. The 565 Excellence sits tallest with a 443mm seat height and a 21-litre waste tank.

Within the Qube range you'll find three flush types. The Qube 145 and 165 use a bellows pump, a soft rubber dome you press down to deliver flush water. The Qube 335, 345 and 365 use a piston pump for a stronger, more controlled flush. The 565P Excellence uses a piston pump on a taller body, and the 565E Excellence runs a battery-powered electric flush with hidden controls, four AA batteries and an integrated toilet roll holder. The collection is entirely Thetford-branded, the company that invented the portable toilet in the late 1960s and remains the dominant manufacturer in this segment. You'll also find Thetford Storage Bags sized to fit the 165/365/565 group and a separate version for the 145/335/345 group, plus hold-down kits for the 165/365 and 335, and replacement seals, blades, pumps and pour-out spouts.

Caravanners use a Porta Potti as a night-time backup when site facilities are a walk away or closed off-season. Motorhome owners often keep one as a secondary toilet alongside the fixed cassette. Campervan converters fit the 335 or 345 under the rear bench or rock-and-roll bed, where the lower profile clears the seat base. Tent campers, festival-goers, boaters and wild campers rely on them as a standalone toilet, and they're popular for fishing trips, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions where wild camping requires waste containment, and as a temporary loo during home renovations or for people recovering from surgery who struggle with stairs. If you're kitting out a full toilet area, pair the Porta Potti with toilet chemicals (Aqua Kem Blue or Green for the waste tank, Aqua Rinse Pink for the flush), Thetford Aquasoft toilet roll and a toilet tent for outdoor privacy.

Start with the storage space available. Measure the height of the cupboard or under-seat void before buying, since the 335 at 313mm is the only model that fits most low-profile spaces. The 145 and 345 sit at 330mm, the 165 and 365 stand at 408mm, and the 565 is the tallest at around 448mm. Next, work out how often you'll empty it. The 145 and 345 hold 12 litres of waste, giving roughly 27 to 33 flushes before emptying per Thetford. The 165, 365 and 565 hold 21 litres, closer to 56 flushes between empties. For two adults on a weekend trip, the 21-litre units are the practical minimum. Entry-level pricing covers the bellows-flush 145 and 165, mid-range the piston-flush 335, 345 and 365 (with hold-down kit compatibility on the 335 and 165/365), and premium the 565P and 565E Excellence with their taller seat, integrated roll holder and dual level indicators. All current Porta Potti models carry a Thetford 3-year warranty in the UK.

Common mistakes are buying for height before checking the storage dimension, and assuming all models share the same flush. The 565E's electric flush is the only one that needs power, drawing from four AA batteries inside the unit, so factor that in if you're off-grid for weeks. Don't use household bleach or kitchen cleaners on the bowl, as these damage the lip seal and blade mechanism. Use a dedicated waste-tank chemical (Aqua Kem Green is septic-tank safe for sites that ban Aqua Kem Blue) and dose the flush tank with Aqua Rinse Pink to keep the seal lubricated and prevent limescale. Empty the waste tank every four to five days even if it isn't full, particularly in summer, and rinse with fresh water after each empty. For travel, fit the hold-down kit (available for the 165/365 and 335, with the 565 using a separate floor plate) to stop the unit sliding around the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Porta Potti 145, 165, 335, 345 and 365?
The 335 is the smallest and lowest unit at 313mm tall with a 10-litre waste tank, designed to fit under campervan seats. The 145 and 345 share a 330mm height with a 12-litre waste tank. The 165 and 365 share the 408mm height with a 21-litre waste tank, giving around 56 flushes between empties. The 145 and 165 use a bellows pump. The 335, 345 and 365 use a piston pump for a stronger flush. The 345 and 365 also feature a waste-tank level indicator.
What is the difference between the Porta Potti 565P and 565E Excellence?
Both 565 Excellence models share the same dimensions of 448 x 388 x 450mm, a 15-litre flush tank, a 21-litre waste tank and a 443mm seat height, the tallest in the Porta Potti range. The 565P uses a manual piston pump for flushing. The 565E adds a battery-powered electric flush operated by a single button, powered by four AA batteries with hidden controls. Both feature a built-in toilet roll holder and dual level indicators for the fresh and waste tanks.
How often does a Porta Potti need emptying?
Thetford recommends emptying the waste-holding tank every 4 to 5 days regardless of fill level, particularly in warm weather. In practical use the 10-litre tank on the 335 gives around 27 flushes, the 12-litre tanks on the 145 and 345 give 27 to 33 flushes, and the 21-litre tanks on the 165, 365 and 565 give closer to 56 flushes. The level indicator on the front of the 345, 365 and 565 turns green when emptying is due.
Which Porta Potti fits under a campervan rock-and-roll bed?
The Porta Potti 335 is the smallest model in the range at 313mm tall, the standard choice for fitting under VW T5/T6 rear seats, RIB beds and similar tight spaces. The 145 and 345 are next at 330mm. Always measure the available height in your van before buying, since the 165, 365 and 565 are substantially larger (408mm and 448mm respectively) and won't fit under most low-profile bed bases.
What chemicals should I use in a Thetford Porta Potti?
Use Thetford Aqua Kem Blue or Aqua Kem Green in the lower waste-holding tank to break down waste, control odours and reduce gas build-up. Aqua Kem Green is septic-tank safe and accepted at sites that ban blue chemicals, while Aqua Kem Blue offers slightly stronger odour control (a dose lasts up to 5 days versus 4 days for Green). In the upper flush tank, use Aqua Rinse Pink to keep the seal lubricated, prevent limescale and freshen the flush water. Avoid household bleach and kitchen cleaners, which damage the seals and blade mechanism.
Can you put toilet paper down a Porta Potti?
Yes, but use a low-ply paper designed to dissolve quickly. Thetford produces Aquasoft, a fast-dissolving toilet roll formulated for portable and cassette toilets that breaks down without clogging the blade or waste tank spout. Standard household toilet paper can build up in the tank and make emptying harder. To test any roll, drop a couple of sheets in a jar of water, shake, and check whether it disintegrates within seconds.
How much water do you put in a Porta Potti?
Fill the top flush-water tank to its maximum capacity with clean water (15 litres for the 145, 165, 345, 365, 565P and 565E, or 10 litres for the 335). Add the dose of Aqua Rinse Pink to the flush tank as directed on the bottle. The waste-holding tank below starts empty before each trip but should have around 2 litres of fresh water poured in along with the dose of Aqua Kem Blue or Green, which helps the chemical work and prevents waste from sticking to the tank walls.
What's the difference between a bellows pump and a piston pump?
A bellows pump is a soft rubber dome on top of the toilet that you press down by hand to deliver flush water. It's fitted to the Porta Potti 145 and 165. A piston pump is a rigid handle you push for a stronger, more controlled flush, fitted to the 335, 345, 365 and 565P. Piston pumps deliver more pressure per stroke and are generally considered easier to use for clearing the bowl. Bellows pumps on older 345 and 365 units can be upgraded to piston pumps using the Thetford 25818-68 service kit.
Where can I empty a Porta Potti?
Empty the waste-holding tank at any campsite chemical disposal point (CDP), motorway service area dump point, or marina pump-out station. The detachable lower tank lifts off with a quick-release catch, has a carry handle and a rotating pour-out spout. Press the vent button on the side as you pour to prevent splashing. Never empty waste into household drains, hedgerows or domestic toilets unless you're using septic-safe Aqua Kem Green and have permission from the property owner.
Is a Porta Potti the same as a cassette toilet?
No. A Porta Potti is a fully portable, self-contained toilet that sits on the floor and can be moved anywhere, with its own flush tank and detachable waste cassette. A cassette toilet (such as the Thetford C200 or C400 range) is fitted permanently into a caravan or motorhome with the waste cassette accessed through an external service hatch. Both use the same Thetford chemicals, but the Porta Potti needs no installation and works in tents, boats and homes as well as vehicles.
Do Porta Potti toilets need electricity?
Only the Porta Potti 565E Excellence needs power, and it runs from four AA batteries inside the unit, not from mains or 12V. The 145, 165, 335, 345, 365 and 565P all use manual pumps and need no electrical connection. This makes the Porta Potti suitable for off-grid camping, festivals, boats without house batteries, and tent use where no power is available.
Can I fix a Porta Potti to the floor of my van or boat?
Yes. Thetford produces a Hold Down Kit that secures the toilet to the floor and releases with a single action for emptying. The kit is available for the Porta Potti 335 (often sold pre-fitted) and for the 165/365. The 565 Excellence uses a separate floor plate. Securing the unit stops it sliding during transit, important on boats and in vans where the toilet sits on a smooth floor.
What's the maximum user weight for a Porta Potti?
Thetford rates all current Porta Potti models for a maximum user weight of 120kg (around 18 stone 12lb). This applies across the Qube 145, 165, 335, 345, 365 and the 565 Excellence range. The toilets are constructed from reinforced high-grade plastic designed for repeated use at that load.
What spare parts are available for the Porta Potti range?
Replacement parts are available for the 145 and 165, the 335/345/365 group, the 465 (legacy) and the 565 Excellence. Common spares include the bellows or piston pump assembly, lip seals, blade and blade seals, pour-out spout caps, vent buttons, level indicator floats and seat assemblies. Use the correct parts diagram for your specific model, since pump types and seal sizes differ between series.
