The Sterling Auxiliary Battery Charger 3 Amp VS-347 keeps your motorhome or caravan's starter battery topped up automatically by transferring excess charge from your leisure battery. This isn't a high-current split charge system - it's designed specifically as a maintenance device that activates when your main battery reaches 13.3V. At this point, it redirects surplus power to your auxiliary battery with just a 0.2V drop, delivering around 3 amps to maintain charge levels.

This unit solves a common problem in motorhomes and campervans left in storage or used infrequently. While your leisure battery gets charged by solar panels or mains hook-up, your starter battery slowly drains through alarm systems, vehicle electronics and natural self-discharge. Three weeks of sitting unused will often leave you with a flat starter battery. The VS-347 prevents this by using FET control technology rather than traditional relays, drawing less than 1mA itself so it doesn't waste precious solar power. The system works entirely automatically once installed, requiring no programming or user intervention.

Installation requires connecting the unit between your leisure and starter battery banks, making it straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic 12V wiring. The compact dimensions (140 x 45 x 40mm) and light weight (0.25kg) mean it fits easily in tight spaces. While this battery maintainer works well with lead acid batteries, it's designed for maintaining rather than recovering deeply discharged batteries - a 100Ah battery at 50% discharge would take 24-36 hours to fully recharge. For faster charging when driving, you'd still need a proper battery-to-battery charger or voltage sensitive relay.
