The Vango Tailgate AirHub II Low is a rear-attachment driveaway awning that pairs well with campervans, panel vans and SUVs fitted with rear doors. It uses Vango's AirBeam technology - you inflate the frame through a single valve rather than threading poles through sleeves. Pitching takes around 10 minutes once you've practised a few times. The connecting tunnel rolls back and toggles out of the way when you want to drive off, so you're not packing everything away if you fancy a trip to the coast or local shops. Two doors in the tunnel itself give you options for accessing your vehicle's rear or side doors without walking round.

The construction uses 150D Sentinel Active fabric with a 4,000mm hydrostatic head rating and ColourLok Eco treatment to stop the colours fading in strong sunlight. Pre-angled beams create more headroom than straight vertical designs, particularly useful if you're over six foot. Diamond Clear windows run along the front with mesh screens and toggled privacy curtains, so you control how much light and airflow you want. Ventilation panels built into the fabric help manage condensation on damp mornings. The linked-in groundsheet detaches for cleaning - helpful after muddy walks or sandy beach trips.

Attachment works through pegged straps at the front and tunnel area, which suits vehicles without awning rails fitted. Traditional options are included too: roof bar tabs, a kador strip and a pole-and-clamp sleeve if your setup needs them. The tunnel adjustment strap takes up slack material for a neater fit against different vehicle shapes. Steel pegs are included for standard pitching, while rock pegs are a great upgrade if you’re camping on tougher ground. The generously sized carry bag makes packing away much easier — Vango have thoughtfully designed it to avoid the usual struggle of fitting an awning back into a tight bag. Optimised for touring holidays, it’s perfect for regular trips and short stays, with materials designed to perform best when not left pitched for long periods in strong sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Tailgate AirHub II Low attach to vehicles without awning rails?
The awning uses pegged straps at the front and tunnel area that secure to the ground rather than to the vehicle itself. This creates tension that holds the tunnel against your tailgate or rear doors. The system works with campervans, panel vans and SUVs that have flat rear doors. If your vehicle does have awning rails, roof bars or a rain gutter, the awning includes traditional attachment options: a kador strip, roof bar tabs and a sleeve for pole-and-clamp systems.
What's the difference between the Low and standard Tailgate AirHub models?
The Low version is designed for vehicles with lower rooflines, typically panel vans, smaller campervans and car-based conversions under 2 metres tall. The standard height model suits higher vehicles like coach-built motorhomes and larger campervans with pop-top roofs. The Low's connecting tunnel sits closer to the ground to match shorter vehicle heights, creating a better seal and reducing draughts. Internal space and floor area remain similar between both versions.
Can you leave the awning pitched while driving away?
Yes, the connecting tunnel rolls back and toggles to the awning's front, leaving the main structure freestanding. You need to purchase a separate Vango Drive Away Kit which includes additional guy ropes and pegs to stabilise the front where the tunnel usually connects. When you return, you reverse back to roughly the same position and re-attach the tunnel. The awning stays where you pitched it, so you keep your camping spot. Note your parking position before leaving - getting the vehicle back in the right place takes practice.
How long does the AirBeam frame take to inflate?
The entire frame inflates through one valve using the included hand pump. First-time pitching typically takes 15-20 minutes including pegging out. With practice, most users get this down to around 10 minutes. The pump has a built-in pressure gauge - you're aiming for the green zone which sits between 5-7 psi. Over-inflating makes the beams too rigid and more prone to damage in wind. Under-inflating leaves the structure saggy and unstable. The beams hold pressure well, though you might need to top up slightly if temperatures drop overnight.
Does the tailgate need to stay open when the awning is attached?
No, the awning's structure is self-supporting through the inflated beams and guy ropes. The connecting tunnel sits against your closed tailgate or rear doors. Two doors built into the tunnel fabric give you access to your vehicle without opening the tailgate itself. This design means you can lock your vehicle properly while the awning stays attached, which is useful overnight or when you're away from the pitch. The tunnel's adjustment strap helps create a snug fit against different door shapes.
What size is the internal living space?
Vango doesn't publish exact dimensions for the Tailgate AirHub II Low, but the space suits two adults comfortably with room for camping chairs and a small table. The pre-angled beam design creates more usable headroom than vertical poles - most people around six foot can stand upright in the centre. Floor space accommodates a double camping bed if you're using it as a sleeping area rather than just day shelter. The linked-in groundsheet covers the full floor area and can be removed if you prefer to leave the base open.
How do you manage condensation in the awning?
The Sentinel Active fabric includes ventilation panels built into the design that create airflow without needing to open doors or windows. The mesh front door lets you keep the main door open for cross-ventilation while keeping insects out. On cold nights, you'll still get some condensation - that's unavoidable with any tent or awning. Wiping down the inside with a microfibre cloth in the morning stops water dripping onto your gear. Leaving a small gap at the bottom of the groundsheet rather than sealing it completely also helps air circulate underneath.
What additions and accessories fit the Tailgate AirHub II Low?
Vango produces specific additions for the Tailgate AirHub range including a Drive Away Kit for leaving the awning freestanding, a carpet that fits the groundsheet dimensions, and sun canopies that attach to the front. The awning uses standard Vango AirBeam repair kits if you puncture a beam. LED lighting strips can hang from the internal lantern points. Generic camping accessories like windbreaks and side panels won't fit properly - the Tailgate's design needs purpose-made additions that match its attachment points and dimensions.
How does the ColourLok Eco treatment work?
ColourLok Eco is Vango's solution-dyed fabric treatment where colour pigments are added during the yarn manufacturing process rather than printed onto finished fabric. This makes the colour part of the fibre itself, so it resists fading from UV exposure and washing. Traditional printed awning fabrics often show noticeable colour loss after a season of use, particularly on sun-facing panels. The Eco element refers to reduced water and chemical usage during production compared to conventional dyeing methods. The treatment doesn't make the fabric waterproof - that comes from the polyurethane coating.
Is the Tailgate AirHub suitable for winter camping?
The 4,000mm waterproof rating handles heavy rain and the structure copes with moderate wind when properly guyed out. Winter camping is possible but you'll notice the single-layer fabric doesn't provide much insulation - it's essentially a shelter rather than an insulated room. The ventilation panels that prevent condensation in summer also let cold air through in winter. If you're planning winter use, consider adding a carpet for floor insulation and bring a portable heater. The AirBeams perform fine in cold temperatures, though they may lose slight pressure as air contracts - top them up in the morning if needed.
