View description
The Robens Fairbanks is a 4 man polycotton bell tent for couples and small groups who drive to a site and want a breathable,single-pole shelter with space for four. Its HydroTex Polycotton flysheet, 65% polyester and 35% cotton, remains cool in warm weather and cuts condensation when temperatures fall. The 210T Oxford polyester groundsheet has a 10,000mm hydrostatic head, and Robens wind tested the Fairbanks to 149 km/h.

One aluminium centre pole, anodised at 36.9 to 47.5 mm, pitches the tent in around 8 minutes. The pole sits offset from dead centre, a Robens design to open up the interior and offer more usable floor on one side. Roll-up side panels let you alter how much air flows through the walls, side wall vents draw fresh air in, and a full mesh inner door stops insects getting in while the outer door remains open.

Pitched, the Fairbanks covers 365 x 300 cm with 185 cm of height at the peak, and a big porch area offers room for boots, chairs and equipment outside the sleeping space. It packs down to 77 x 20 cm and weighs 9.6kg. Reflective guylines keep the tent visible after dark, and Robens advises weathering the polycotton flysheet after purchase by soaking it with a garden hose and letting it dry fully to tighten the weave.

Bigger groups requiring room to spread out pick the Fairbanks Grande, a 7 man model with 240 cm of standing height at the pole. It pitches in around 11 minutes. The regular Fairbanks is for couples and smaller groups of up to four who want a more compact tent for a quieter getaway rather than a crowd.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the Robens Fairbanks?
Pitched, it measures 365 cm long, 300 cm wide and 185 cm high at the centre pole. Inside there is one bedroom and a large porch area for gear. It weighs 9.6kg and packs down to 77 x 20 cm.
Should I choose the Fairbanks or the Fairbanks Grande?
The Fairbanks sleeps four on a 365 x 300 cm footprint, weighs 9.6kg and pitches in about 8 minutes. The Fairbanks Grande sleeps seven on a 470 x 380 cm footprint with 240 cm of standing height, weighs 13.5kg and pitches in about 11 minutes. Both use the same HydroTex Polycotton flysheet and single centre pole design.
How long does the Fairbanks take to pitch?
Robens gives a pitching time of 8 minutes, with the tent ready to move into at 7 minutes. It goes up on a single aluminium centre pole with the inner and flysheet pitching in one.
Is the Robens Fairbanks waterproof?
The flysheet is HydroTex Polycotton, 65% polyester and 35% cotton. In rain the cotton fibres swell to tighten the weave and form a waterproof seal, and Robens adds a water-repellent treatment. The groundsheet is 210T Oxford polyester with a 10,000mm hydrostatic head.
What is HydroTex Polycotton?
It is a tight-weave fabric of 65% polyester and 35% cotton with a water-repellent treatment. In heavier rain the cotton fibres swell to tighten the weave and form a waterproof seal. It breathes well, stays cool in summer and is warmer when temperatures fall. Robens also adds a UV-inhibitor treatment.
Does the Fairbanks need weathering before first use?
Robens says weathering is not strictly required with HydroTex Polycotton, but recommends it after purchase and again after long storage. Soak the flysheet thoroughly with a garden hose, let it dry fully, and repeat a couple of times to tighten the weave.
How is the Fairbanks ventilated?
Roll-up side panels on the walls let you adjust airflow. Side wall vents draw in fresh air, and a full mesh inner door allows ventilation with the outer door open while keeping insects out.
How wind resistant is the Robens Fairbanks?
Robens wind tested the Fairbanks to 149 km/h. The single centre pole is aluminium anodised at 36.9 to 47.5 mm diameter, and reflective guylines hold the tent steady in exposed conditions.

Hydrostatic Head (mm)10000The hydrostatic head of a fabric indicates how well it can keep water out and how waterproof it is. The higher the number, the better! A tent needs to have at least 1000mm HH for light showers, heavy rain and driving wind will put more pressure on the fabric and would therefore require a higher HH of 2000mm. Anything higher than this figure means it can keep out water being pushed through by someone leaning against it for example.
MaterialPolycottonMost tents are made from different denier polyester, which is a lightweight, very waterproof material. Polycotton is a heavier fabric, that breathes well allowing campers to stay cooler in sunnier climates. It is also very good at reducting condensation inside the tent.
Persons4Tent berth indicates how many people your tent can accommodate for sleeping. The industry standard allocates about 60cm of width per occupant, though exact dimensions can vary by manufacturer. If you prefer extra elbow room, you may want a tent berth larger than your headcount. Many campers size up by one or two berths to improve comfort on longer trips.
Pole constructionAluminiumThis is whether the poles are inflatable (air) or rigid (e.g - fibreglass / steel or aluminium).
Porch AreaNoA porch area gives campers a lot of extra room, that can be used as a wet zone (drying off before entering the main living space), storage of all your outside gear overnight, or as a place to cook and dine or a great area for your family dog to sleep. It adds a lot of versatility to your camping lifestyle.
Weight (kg)9.60This is the weight of the tent in kg.
Wing AreaNoAn additional wing area can be very useful as it can be used as an extra bedroom area, storage of toys and camping equipment or as a place to put a comfy inflatable sofa, so you can sit back and read your favourite book. Alternatively, it is an ideal spot for the family dog to sleep.
