  Product Description
The Brunner Comet is a frameless tailgate awning designed specifically for VW T5 and T6 campervans with vertical opening tailgates. It attaches directly to your van's tailgate without the need for complicated poles or frame assembly, making it one of the quickest rear awnings to set up on the market. The awning is constructed from 150D Oxford Polyester with a 3000mm waterproof rating, providing reliable weather protection for storage, cooking or sleeping space. At 5.1kg and packing down to 63 x 18cm, it's light enough to store permanently in your van without eating into precious storage space.

Why choose a frameless tailgate Awning for your VW T5 or T6?

Frameless tailgate awnings like the Brunner Comet eliminate the hassle of threading poles through fabric and wrestling with traditional awning frames. The Comet simply drapes over your open tailgate and secures with the included fittings and two vertical poles. Setup takes around 5 minutes, and the 200 x 200 x 205cm interior gives you a proper standing-height space for bike storage, outdoor cooking or an extra sleeping area.

The awning features two large entrance doors and three mesh windows with roll-down blinds, creating excellent cross-ventilation during summer camping trips. The dual door design means you're not restricted to entering from one side, and the mesh panels keep insects out while allowing airflow through the awning. Fittings, vertical poles and a carry bag are all included, so you've got everything needed to extend your VW's living space when you reach your campsite. The Comet works exclusively with vertical tailgates and won't fit barn door setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Brunner Comet fit VW T6.1 campervans?
Yes, the Brunner Comet tailgate awning fits VW T5, T6 and T6.1 models with vertical opening tailgates. It attaches to the open tailgate using the included fittings and works with all Transporter variants that have a single vertical tailgate rather than barn doors.
Can you sleep inside the Brunner Comet tailgate awning?
The Brunner Comet measures 200 x 200cm with a 205cm standing height, providing enough floor space for a double air mattress or two single sleeping mats. The 3000mm waterproof rating and enclosed sides with zip doors make it suitable for overnight sleeping, though the awning relies on your tailgate remaining open for structural support.
How long does it take to set up the Comet tailgate awning?
Setup takes approximately 5 minutes. The frameless design means you simply drape the tent over your open tailgate, secure it with the included fittings, position the two vertical support poles and peg out the base. There are no complicated pole sleeves or frame assemblies to deal with.
Will the Brunner Comet work with a bike rack on my tailgate?
No, the Brunner Comet requires a clear tailgate to attach properly. If you have a bike rack mounted on your tailgate, you'll need to remove it before installing the awning. The awning is designed to fit directly over the bare tailgate and won't accommodate racks or other accessories.
What's included with the Brunner Comet tailgate awning?
The Brunner Comet comes with the tailgate awning itself, all necessary fittings to attach it to your VW T5 or T6, two vertical support poles for tensioning the structure, tent pegs for ground anchoring and a carry bag for storage. Everything you need for installation is included in the package.
Is the Brunner Comet waterproof?
The Brunner Comet has a 3000mm hydrostatic head rating, which provides reliable waterproof protection in typical UK camping conditions including steady rain. The material is 150D Oxford Polyester with PU coating. The awning's waterproofing is suitable for general camping use, though prolonged heavy downpours or standing water should be avoided.
